Skype for PocketPC 2.0 Available

Skype has taken the wraps off Skype for PocketPC 2.0, enabling Skype users to make voice calls anywhere they can connect to the Internet using Wi-Fi and/or 3G mobile networks. The software is available as a free download, and supports a wide range of PocketPC devices, including HP iPAQ hw6900 series Mobile Messenger (plus hx2400, hx2700, rx3700 and hx4700 series devices); the Dell X3i, X30, X50, X50v, x51 and x51v models; and Fujitsu Siemens Computers Pocket LOOX N520, 718 and 720 models.

According to their story, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and Fujitsu Siemens Computers plan on preinstalling the full version of Windows including all of the media features regardless of the EU’s (European Commission) decision to have Microsoft offer a “medialess” version of their OS.

“It simplifies our ordering process to not have to distinguish between versions of the OS we load and ship with our systems,” a spokesperson for Dell says. “We will continue to monitor demand and could look at this again later if customer preference changes.”

According to the story, industry analysts are not surprised by the PC vendors lack of support regarding the EU’s decision.

Fujitsu-Siemens Launches New Pocket Loox

Fujitsu Siemens Computers has introduced two new handhelds – the Pocket LOOX 410 and 420 – designed for both private and corporate users. The new systems are extremely compact (at 11.3 cm x 7.1 cm x 1.4 cm, about half the size of a CD cover) and weigh only around 125 grams (or that of a small apple). The operating system, Microsoft Windows MobileTM 2003 for Pocket PCs, supports numerous entertainment, navigational and Office applications, including Mail, Excel and Word. While both models can connect to the Internet via Bluetooth, the Pocket LOOX 420 also has a wireless LAN interface for a fast connection via hotspot connectivity that can be used in parallel to the Bluetooth connection.

Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket LOOX 610 launched

Industrypartners around the world, including new and existing Windows Mobile-based Pocket PC manufacturers, mobile operators and independent software vendors (ISVs), joined Microsoft in the introduction ofthis offering. In related news, Microsoft today also announced the new Windows Mobile brand, a single brand that extends the familiarity of the Windows® brand, while reflecting the uniqueness ofsoftware for mobile devices.
