First Weekend iPhone Sales: 500,000+

First Weekend iPhone Sales: 500,000+

For readers who may have been in a cave during the last month—or who were perhaps abducted by aliens and only just returned to Earth—Apple launched it’s much-anticipated iPhone on Friday. Although most Apple stores and AT&T corporate stores did see people lining up for the 6 PM start of sales on Friday, the companies were able to meet initial demand in all but a few locations, and a feared iPhone sell-out never materialized—no doubt to the chagrin of folks who waited in line for units they hoped to unload on eBay at astonishing markups.

Nokia Debuts New Internet Tablet, Camcorder

It might not be Apple’s new iPhone, but Nokia wants people to know its been in the mobile Internet game for a long while now, and it actually has products available now, as opposed to maybe coming down the line in six months. Nokia’s new N800 Internet tablet, being shown off this week at the CES show in Las Vegas, is an update to its earlier N770 mobile surfing device. The idea behind the Internet Tablet is to let users keep up with their news, email, instant messaging, and Web services while also serving as a personal entertainment device with music and video. And although the N800 does support VoIP calling, the device is not, itself, a phone. Instead, it connects to the Internet using Wi-Fi or via a separate Bluetooth-capable phone that can talk to mobile data services.

Cleveland Gets Cingular 3G Service

Earlier this week we wrote about Cingular rolling out 3G service in Little Rock, and they seem to be standing behind their word of rolling our 3G into more U.S. cities with today’s announcement.

Cingular’s BroadbandConnect service using HSPDA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) technology is available to nearly 35 million people in 52 "communities" throughout the U.S.. HSPDA is Cingular’s own version of 3G EDGE/GSM and will allow their customers to access video and multimedia content at blazing fast speeds. 3G phones like the LG CU 500 (reviewed here) are now available in Cleveland for $99.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate card and a two-year service agreement.
