Nokia Brings N85, N79 to United States

Nokia has once again decided to go it alone with its high-end Internet-centric, multimedia-savvy smartphones, announcing the N85 and N79 devices are now on sale in the United States. Both phones are available unlocked and without partnerships with network operators, which means users will pay the full brunt of the unsubsidized phone’s cost: $539 for the N85 and $439 for the N79.

"We’re excited to have these two multimedia devices available in the United States now—and in time for the holidays," said Nokia Americas VP of sales Alessandro Lamanna, in a statement.

Asus Sets Speed Record with P565

While other smartphone manufacturers battle over who has the biggest screen or the nicest QWERTY keyboard, Asus brought a focus on speed to the game with Friday’s launch of the P565. Thanks to an 800MHz CPU inside, Asus claims it’s the fastest smart phone on the market today.

According to Asus, the Marvell TavorP process delivers benchmark scores up to twice as high as those from competing phones, making the P565 more suited to multitasking and graphically intense operations. The company has also upped the ante with its display, which spans only 2.8 inches but packs full 640 x 480 resolution – double that of the iPhone.

Nokia N96 Finally Touches Down in U.S.

Following up on promises made this summer, Nokia officially gave word on Monday that its flagship N96 smart phone is available in the United States. Though American consumers who have been drooling over the hot Finnish phone will be able to get their hands on it without any import shenanigans, the price tag on the new phone will keep it in firmly in the hands of the elite.

Key features on the N96 include a 2.8-inch display, 16GB of internal memory, a 5-megapixel camera, GPS, and dual sliding design. It’s also compatible with American 3G HSDPA networks in the 850 and 1900 MHz range, such as AT&T.

HTC S740’s Got Your Numbers And Your QWERTY

HTC S740

As long as we’re talking about 3.5G HSDPA smartphones that aren’t likely to make it to North America (ahem), we might as well mention the HTC S740, a follow-up to the HTC Touch Diamond that packs 7.2 Mbps HSDPA/WCDMA 900/2100 MHz access for use in Europe, along with quad-band GSM/EDGE and a standalone GPS receiver. The S740 runs Windows MObile 6.1—and so offers access to Outlook, mobile versions of Office applications, Mobile IE, Exchange capability, Windows Media Player, etc., etc.—what might really set the S740 is its form factor. All put together, it’s just a phone with a keypad. Slide it open, the S740 packs a complete QWERTY keyboard for all your messaging needs.
