iPhone 3G Finally Unlocked?

iPhone 3G Finally Unlocked?

Though Apple’s 3G iPhone will remain exclusive to AT&T for years now, industrious hacker types should be able to free their phones from the network within weeks. The infamous iPhone Dev Team that cracked the original EDGE model is claiming to have done it again, with the release of a consumer-friendly cracking tool slated for December 31.

The hack, codenamed “yellowsn0w,” should allow 3G iPhone’s purchased for AT&T to run on competing GSM networks, such as T-Mobile in the U.S., and many others abroad. The hack will require the 2.11.07 baseband (a sort of version number for the phone’s GSM modem software) which means that owners of newer iPhones and those who recently upgraded may be out of luck until further progress has been made.

Apple Allows Online iPhone 3G Purchases

Apple Allows Online iPhone 3G Purchases

When Apple launched its 3G iPhone, lines were massive and slow as customers had to do their sign up and activation in the store, reportedly at the request of carrier AT&T, to ensure the handset wasn’t unlocked quickly – which had happened with the first generation of the handset, where customers could undertake the activation from home.

Now, according to InformationWeek, Apple has turned the process on its head, They’ve set up a page where customers can sign up for the phone and take care of all details except activation. They still have to go to an Apple, AT&T or Best Buy store to collect and activate the phone, but this should streamline the procedure. It’s part of a move by Apple to shift 10 million iPhones this year.

Smartphones Gather Steam as Prices Plunge

Smartphones Gather Steam as Prices Plunge

Smartphones aren’t just for suits anymore. According to the NPD Group, the popularity of formerly exclusive multitasking phones like BlackBerrys has picked up significantly in the last year, with smartphones now accounting for 19 percent of total mobile phone sales.

By contrast, smartphones represented just 9 percent in the same measurement period (January through July) of last year.  Why the sudden shift? According to NPD’s director of industry analysis, Ross Rubin, declining prices, streamlined form factors, and consumer Internet connectivity all played a role. The average price of a smartphone dropped from $199 to $185 in the year between measurements, reflecting a shift toward affordability, even as features continued to improve.

Pay-As-You-Go 3G iPhone

Pay-As-You-Go 3G iPhone

UK pay-as-you-go customers who’ve been wanting a 3G iPhone are in luck. From September 16, O2, which has the handset franchise for Britain, will be offering it, but the set itself will cost you – around $700 for the 8GB model and $800 for the 16GB.
The phone will be available at O2 and Apple stores, as well as at Carphone Warehouse.

O2 noted that the price “includes unlimited browsing and Wi-Fi for the first 12 months after you activate your iPhone 3G. At the end of the 12 months you can continue to receive unlimited browsing and Wi-Fi for just $20 per month. We’ll notify you before the end of the 12 month period by text and you can easily unsubscribe if you choose to do so.”

Apple Releases iPhone Fix

Apple Releases iPhone Fix

Apple has released a software update for its 3G iPhone which should eliminate the problems with reception and dropped calls reported by a number of users.

Although Apple has made no official comment on the problem, as is its way, some have speculated that the problem might lie in the Infeon chipset the handset uses.

From hints that have been dropped, it’s believed that the problem affects around 60,000 users. The iPhone firmware 2.0.2 is available for download through iTunes.

Chris Neher, of MacDailyNews.com, told the BBC:

iPhones for 200,000 HSBC Staff?

Apple head Steve Jobs has claimed that the 3G iPhone sold one million units in its first weekend. That’s impressive, but he’ll be rubbing his hands with glee if the chips at banking giant HSBC fall the right way.

In an interview with ZDNet, HSBC’s Australia and New Zealand chief information officer Brenton Hush said:

"We are actually reviewing iPhones from a HSBC Group perspective… and when I say that, I mean globally."

That would, in turn, be a major blow to BlackBerry, currently HSBC’s smartphone of choice for its employees. It could also mean a massive order for Apple, as around 200,000 HSBC staff would be issued with the phones.

iPhone Boosts AT&T

AT&T must be very glad they signed up to sell the iPhone. They’ve reported their second quarter revenues as $30.7 billion, which is a massive 54% increase over last year, and the company is happy to credit the iPhone for the success. AT&T is the exclusive iPhone network carrier in the US.

AT&T’s wireless unit reported a 52% increase, and initial sales of the new 3G iPhone have been twice those of the original.

AT&T’s chairman and chief executive Randall Stephenson said:

Despite activation woes and generally glum economic news that accompanied its launch, Apple’s 3G iPhone put the original to shame this weekend by selling 1 million units in just three days.  The company released its official figures on Monday.

“iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs, in a statement. “It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world.”

Early July Malware Spike

Early July Malware Spike

Malware writers like to use any opportunity to distribute their goods. So that makes today’s holiday a golden opportunity to them, according to security company MXLogic, who also predicted that the launch next week of Apple’s 3G iPhone will see another spike in e-mails containing malware.

Last year, the company noted, spammers used the 4th to unleash a wave of mails containing the Storm Trojan using botnets, and as of yesterday afternoon, Vnunet reported that F-Secure had reported mails offering videos of fireworks displays that contained Storm.

Hop-on Announces Six Handsets

Hop-on Announces Six Handsets

Renegade handset maker Hop-on isn’t content to rest on the buzz surrounding its disposable $10 “anti-iPhone,” the HOP1800, which it bills as the lowest-cost mobile phone in the world. Now the company says it has six more GMS and 3G phones up it sleeve, ready to go on sale worldwide, including the HOP1801 Smart Phone, which it claims will be the lowest cost smart phone on the market. But that’s literally all Hop-on has revealed about the HOP1801: no mention of operating system, software, memory, hardware specs, screen size, or anything else.
