Mobile operator Sprint is rolling out more WiMax-capable gear, announcing two new Sprint 4G Mobile Broadband Routers. The Sprint Personal Hotspot PHD300S enables up to four WiFi-capable devices to connect to the Internet using mobile data networks, while the Cradlepoint MBDR-1000 Broadband Router is aimed at businesses that nee to hook up as many as 32 WiFi devices to the Internet—and both devices support latching onto Sprint’s 3G mobile network as well as 4G WiMax networks where available.

Clearwire Officially Fires Up WiMax in Vegas
Clearwire has officially launched its Clear-branded 4G WiMax mobile broadband service in Las Vegas, Nevada, marking the company’s fourth major WiMax service area following Baltimore, Portland Oregon, and Atlanta. Clearwire says the Las Vegas service area covers about 1.7 million people over 638 square miles.
“Wile it’s true that happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, now, thanks to Clear, that doesn’t mean it has to stay in one place,” said Jeremy Abler, General Manager of Las Vegas market for Clearwire. “Clear will bring to Las Vegas residents the super-fast mobile internet experience they’re used to having at home or the office, anywhere around town, or on the go.”
Netgear Demonstrates 2009 Offerings
Netgear’s characteristically small CES press conference held few surprises this year, but 2009 promises to be a fruitful year for media enthusiasts with a need to bring content from the Web and their computers to the their TVs. The company’s general manager of home and consumer products, Vivek Pathela, demonstrated three of the 15 new products the company will unveil at this year’s expo.
Sprint Rolls Out WiMax/3G Dual-Mode Modem
Sprint has taken the wraps off the Sprint 3G/4G USB Modem U300, enabling users to tap into WiMax mobile broadband connectivity in areas where Clearwire’s WiMax network is already online—e.g., Baltimore—but fall back on old-school 3G technology outside WiMax service areas, so users don’t have to carry a separate device to stay connected.
“Sprint intends to be the leader in 4G and bring the wireless Internet to life,” said Sprint CEO Dan Hesse, in a statement. “This first-of-its-kind device allows our customers to take the Internet with them essentially wherever they go by gaining enhanced speed and capability in 4G markets and the nationwide coverage of our 3G network across the rest of the country.”
Ubuntu 8.10 Launches Thursday
Hardcore Ubuntu fans around the world may have been tinkering with beta releases of the brand new 8.10 version for weeks now, but more timid users will finally get a chance to break it on Thursday when Canonical releases the final stable version. The new release will feature built-in 3G support, “guest sessions” for more private sharing of computers, and programming from the BBC built into Ubuntu’s media player, among other new features.
TiVo Debuts New Wireless Adapter
It looks as if TiVo has rolled out their own wireless adapter to tie their Series2 DVRs into a home network. The new TiVo Wireless G USB Network Adapter is available now for $49.99.
The TiVo Wireless G USB Network Adapter, as first reported over at the tech blog Zatz Not Funny, allows a TiVo Series2 DVR to wirelessly connect to a 802.11g or 802.11b network through its USB port. The adapter is not unlike third party units already for sale through TiVo’s website, though it can be assumed there is a higher degree of compatibility and functionality since TiVo’s device was designed specifically with the company’s DVRs in mind.
