HTC Touch Diamond Adds 3G, One-Finger Use

HTC Touch Diamond Adds 3G, One-Finger Use

HTC has unveiled the HTC Touch Diamond, an update to its popular HTC Touch smartphone. The device packs 3G data capability, the company’s TouchFlo touch-screen interface designed to be used with just one finger, and Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional for enterprise-class communications and integration needs. And the HTC Touch Diamond sports a distinctive look, with gem-like geometric facets and a large, 2.8-inch display.

“Today we mark a new era in mobile phone evolution, an era where beauty and size integrate with uncompromising innovation at broadband speeds,” said HTC president and CEO Peter Chou, in a statement. “The HTC Touch Diamond will make browsing the Web and using Web-enabled applications just as practical and easy to use as making calls.”

Qualcomm Chip Ban Upheld

Qualcomm Chip Ban Upheld

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington D.C. has let stand a lower court ruling that prevents Qualcomm from selling some of its 3G WCDMA wireless chips in the United States. The original injunction was handed down in early January and bars Qualcomm from selling or supporting wireless phone chips infringe on three Broadcom patents.

Qualcomm has been appealing the decision and the injunction; in the meantime, the company has been offering UMTS chip designs that don’t infringe on Broadcom technology. Qualcomm may also sell selected infringing chips under a “sunset” provision ending January 31, 2009, while paying royalties to Broadcom.

First, Microsoft engages cerebral guitarist and soundscape archtect Robert Fripp to put the mojo into the sounds for Windows Vista; now, Finland’s Nokia is rolling out a phone with its own soundtrack composed by high-profile producer and ambient music pioneer Brian Eno. What’s next? Peter Gabriel contributing sounds to a Bluetooth alarm clock? Fairport Convention re-uniting to promote RFID-bearing jeans?
