Mobile operator Sprint is rolling out more WiMax-capable gear, announcing two new Sprint 4G Mobile Broadband Routers. The Sprint Personal Hotspot PHD300S enables up to four WiFi-capable devices to connect to the Internet using mobile data networks, while the Cradlepoint MBDR-1000 Broadband Router is aimed at businesses that nee to hook up as many as 32 WiFi devices to the Internet—and both devices support latching onto Sprint’s 3G mobile network as well as 4G WiMax networks where available.

Clearwire Officially Fires Up WiMax in Vegas
Clearwire has officially launched its Clear-branded 4G WiMax mobile broadband service in Las Vegas, Nevada, marking the company’s fourth major WiMax service area following Baltimore, Portland Oregon, and Atlanta. Clearwire says the Las Vegas service area covers about 1.7 million people over 638 square miles.
“Wile it’s true that happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, now, thanks to Clear, that doesn’t mean it has to stay in one place,” said Jeremy Abler, General Manager of Las Vegas market for Clearwire. “Clear will bring to Las Vegas residents the super-fast mobile internet experience they’re used to having at home or the office, anywhere around town, or on the go.”
Sprint Outsources Billions in Network Operations to Ericsson
In a a move to cut costs and improve its corporate balance sheet, telecommunications provider Sprint has announced a seven-year agreement to turn over operation of its networks to Ericsson. Dubbed Network Advantage, Sprint will pay Ericsson $4.5 to $5 billion over the term of the contract, and roughly 6,000 Sprint personnel will transfer to Ericsson as part of the deal.
“No other U.S.-based carrier has followed through on the business-enhancing vision inherent in Network Advantage,” said Sprint’s president of network operations and wholesale Steve Elfman, in a statement. “Our best-ever network performance will become even better by leveraging Ericsson’s world-class leadership in network services, their proprietary tools, and the knowledge of more than 30,000 dedicated and highly-specialized service professionals to power Sprint’s Now Network.”
Clearwire Officially Greenlights WiMax in Atlanta
Although the rollout isn’t going as quickly as many would have hoped, Clearwire Communications has formally introduced 4G WiMax mobile broadband service to the Atlanta, Georgia area. Clearwire claims the service reaches about 3 million people over an area of about 1,200 square miles, making it the largest WiMAX service area in the United States.
The Atlanta WiMax network has been quietly operating in Atlanta for weeks, but consumers were not able to sign up for the service, which Clearwire offers under the name “Clear.” Clearwire previously rolled out WiMax services in Baltimore, Maryland, and Portland, Oregon.
Clearwire Lights Up WiMAX in Portland
Newly re-hatched Sprint partnership Clearwire has lit up its 4G WiMAX broadband network in Portland, Oregon. Previously, Sprint brought up WiMAX in Baltimore, Maryland; Portland is the second U.S. city to get WiMAX mobile broadband capability. Clearwire—now the name in front of the WiMAX network in a complex deal with Sprint and other financial backers—plans to roll out a nationwide WiMAX network…although those long-simmering plans have been delayed by Sprint’s finances.
“Today is a historic day for the evolution of mobile computing and communications services in Portland, and the U.S.,” said Clearwire CEO Benjamin G. Wolff, in a statement. “We’re providing a valuable service designed to improve our customers’ productivity and make their lives more enjoyable, wherever they happen to be in our coverage area.”
