New Nintendo Gameboy In 2005?

“While Nintendo’s next generation console gaming system likely won’t hit living rooms until 2006, that doesn’t mean the company won’t introduce new hardware this year. A new analyst report suggests the company is planning to ship the next version of the Game Boy portable gaming system by the end of 2005.

If so, that would be the third new handheld gaming system in as many years for Nintendo, whose Nintendo DS was one of the hottest items of the 2004 holiday season and Game Boy Advance SP was one of the must-have gifts of 2003. The new Game Boy would face stiff competition, though, from Sony’s PSP

Nintendo Sells 500K DS Systems Thus Far

With Nintendo DS sales moving faster than anticipated, some locations have reported sellouts, and Nintendo predicts the initial North American supply will be depleted within days. As additional shipments are rushed to stores by this weekend to meet the demand, Nintendo expects to sell 1 million Nintendo DS units in North America alone by the end of 2004 — a mark that took Apple’s iPod 19 months to achieve.

“Consumers have voted the Nintendo DS as the hot item this holiday, so if you see one, you’d better buy it,” says Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales & marketing. “Nintendo owns the hand-held market, and once again we’re the hit of the holiday season.”

Nintendo Drops Price Of Game Boy Advance SP

The reduction significantly expands the potential audience of an already dominant consumer electronics device to a wider range of consumers.

At the same time, Nintendo also paves the way for more “Mayhem” – the watchword of the new “Start Mayhem” Game Boy Advance SP marketing campaign that debuts with the new price point, showcasing different personalities for each of the GBA SP colors.

“This new price point makes Game Boy Advance SP affordable for the vast majority of the mass market, and gives people a `gotta-have’ gift to automatically put at the top of their holiday gift lists,” said George Harrison, Nintendo of America’s senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. “Nintendo has always owned the portable video game market, and this further strengthens our leadership position.”

Nintendo Could Take Hit On New DS System

The two-screen Nintendo DS console is unlikely to be as profitable from the outset as the Game Boy Advance was, company president Satoru Iwata has warned, with the complex design of the handheld presenting both financial and supply problems.

Speaking with news agency Reuters, Iwata-san said that the use of two screens in the system was presenting a challenge to LCD panel supplier Sharp, prompting fears that there may be a shortage of DS hardware at its launch later this year.

Square Enix Comments On PSP

Inspired by Koei’s recent confirmation of PSP titles at its recent mid-year conference, the Japanese press looked for similar comments from Square Enix, but president Yoichi Wada said “Wecannot say whether development is moving forward or not.”

Wada did, however, offer some comments on PSP that echoed Koei president Keiko Erikawa’s remarks earlier this week. He said that he does not expect it to compete directly with the Game Boy Advance, at least not to the degree that some observers have assumed, due to the gulf between the two systems’ hardware capabilities and corresponding price points. As a consequence, he said, the two platforms will likely share little in common between their respective software libraries, suggesting that Square Enix and other publishers may support both handhelds with different ranges of games.

Nintendo claims US sales victory in October

GameCube’s market share for the month of October boosted by ten points and overtaking the Xbox’.

Figures from market research body NPD show the Cube selling over a quarter of a million units during October, which is 50 per cent higher than any other month in 2003 – and also higher than any sales month the Xbox has registered this year.

This allowed the platform to grab 35 per cent market share for the full month, while the PS2 dropped nine points and the Xbox dropped a single point. This left the Xbox with about 24 per cent share (sales of 176,000 units) and the PS2 on 41 per cent share (sales of 300,000 units).

GameCube outsells PS2 in the USA

Nintendo has shot to the top of the class in America, with the GameCube outselling the PS2 by 20 per cent to become the best selling home console in the USA last week following a price reduction in late September.

According to a statement from Nintendo of America, the Cube was the second biggest selling console in the country (after the Game Boy Advance, which consistently outsells all of the home consoles) for the week ended October 4th.

This achievement saw it outselling the PlayStation 2 by a 20 per cent margin, and racking up more than twice the sales of the Xbox – with a 145 per cent lead over Microsoft’s console.

Nintendo to launch new console in China

The new platform, called the iQue Player (and dubbed the “Nintendo Compact” elsewhere, although we’re not sure where that title came from), will come with a memory card which gamers can use to download games from terminals in specific shops for a fee.

The memory card will be tied to a single console, and games cannot be copied between cards, while the terminals themselves are expected to be closed systems provided by Nintendo. The console, supplied with a memory card, will cost 498 Yuan (about

Game Boy Advance works as video-phone

The 13,000 yen ($A167) Campho Advance from Kyoto-based Digital Act Co., which makes mobile and Internet equipment, slips into the top of the Game Boy Advance just like any video-game cassette.

When connected to an analogue telephone outlet, the display shows live video of the person on the other end of the line, who must also own both the Game Boy Advance and the Campho Advance. Your own image will show up in the corner of the display.
