Computer Shipments Down On Last Year

Computer Shipments Down On Last Year

World computer shipments between April and June were down 5% on the same period last year, according to research group Gartner. While that news is hardly surprising, it’s better than expected, since the company had forecast a 9.8% drop.

With over 19% of PC shipments, Hewlett-Packard remained top dog, and actually increased its market share from last year’s 18.1%, due to what Gartner termed “aggressive” price cuts.

Dell remained runner up, but its share fell from 15.6% to 13.6%, probably due to the company deciding to “protect its margins” rather than go in for big price cuts.

Acer Tops EMEA PS Sales

The people at Acer have every reason to be feeling good today. According to a new report from Gartner, the company has pipped HP as the leading PC seller for the third quarter in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), and secured third place in global sales behind HP and Dell. Much of the credit is due to Acer’s strong position in the mini-notebook market, according to ZDNet.

According to Ranjit Atwal, Gartner principal analyst for client computing markets:

"HP delayed its introduction of mini-notebooks into the market, potentially fearing cannibalization of its existing notebook markets, but did not anticipate that Acer would be able to ramp up its channels so quickly."

IPTV Subscribers Up 64 Pct in 2008

IPTV Subscribers Up 64 Pct in 2008

Market analysis firm Gartner says the number of IPTV subscribers—folks who subscribe to video services delivered over the Internet—is on pace to reach a total of 19.6 million subscribers worldwide by the end of 2008, which would represent a 64.1 percent increase over 12 million IPTV users in 2007. Gartner also projects that the IPTV market will represent $4.5 billion in business during 2008 (a 93.5 percent increase over 2007) and will climb all the way up to $19 billion by 2012.

The new figures mean, statistically speaking, just over one percent of all households worldwide will subscribe to IPTV services. If Gartner’s projections hold, that figure will reach 2.8 percent in 2012.

Gartner: Over One Bln Computers in Use

Gartner: Over One Bln Computers in Use

Research firm Gartner says it believes the total number of installed PCs worldwide has now surpassed one billion machines, meaning there’s roughly one computer in operation for every 6.7 people on the planet. Furthermore, Gartner estimates the annual growth rate of the total PC installed base worldwide will be growing by just under 12 percent a year, so the figure is likely to hit two billion by 2014.

Gartner’s definition of a PC includes desktop and notebook systems, but omits devices like PDAs and phones.

Dell, Apple See Computer Sales Gains

Dell, Apple See Computer Sales Gains

New figures released by Gartner and IDC on comptuer sales during the third quarter of 2007 disagree on some details, but overall paint the same picture: Hewlett Packard continues to occupy the number one spot in the worldwide market, but Dell is staging a sales recovery after several quarters of decline, and media darling Apple is managing to sell plenty of Macs, and has taken over the number three spot in U.S. computer sales.

Vista Not a Big Factor in PC Sales

Vista Not a Big Factor in PC Sales

Market research firm Gartner has released estimates for 2007 worldwide computer sales, forecasting an overall 11.1 percent increase compared to 2006. But the surprise is that Gartner finds this increase is being driven by strong demand for PCs in emerging markets, while last year’s release of Windows Vista is not a strong factor in encouraging sales of new PCs.

“The release of Microsoft Windows Vista operating system at the end of January has, so far, failed to stimulate the market in the way many hoped,” said George Shiffler, research director for Gartner’s Client Platforms Markets Group. “Our market data suggest Vista has had very limited impact on PC demand or replacement activity. We don’t see Vista having a significant effect on these going forward unless Microsoft becomes much more aggressive in its marketing efforts.”

Gartner Rolls Out Crystal Ball

Market research firms are in a somewhat shaky business: on one hand, they’re expected to apply their expertise and knowledge to form meaningful conclusions about the directions of particular technologies, industries, market trends, and and consumer behaviors—on the other hand, making future forecasts is a good way for these companies to shoot themselves in the foot because, if they turn out to be less-than-accurate, their reputations and bottom lines suffer.

Gartner: 2.6 Bln Cell Phones in Use by 2009

Gartner Inc. has published a survey in which it estimates global cell phone sales will reach 799 million units during 2005, and peak at over 1 billion units worldwide by 2009, although overall growth of the cell phone market will begin to slow. By 2009, Gartner estimates 2.6 billion cell phones will be in use.

Smart phones, which represent one of the fastest-growing segments of the handset industry, will continue to remain a luxury item, accounting for 200 million units in 2009, or roughly one phone in five. In the meantime, emerging markets like China, India, and Brazil will see faster market growth rates than mature markets like Europe and North America. By 2009, according to the study, one in three cell phones will be sold in Asia.

PC Forecast Slightly Rises

Gartner analysts previously projected worldwide PC shipments would increase 9.9 percent.

Worldwide mobile PC shipments are expected to grow 26.5 percent in 2005, while deskbased units are now forecast to grow 4.6 percent. Mobile PCs currently make up just under 30 percent of all PC shipments.

“Mobile PCs are continuing to attract more new users as mobile prices fall and wireless becomes more pervasive,” said George Shiffler, principal analyst for Gartner’s Client Platforms research. “Growing numbers of users are replacing their old desktops with more portable mobiles, and this is one of several factors helping to boost mobile PC growth.”

Mobile Phones Sales up 17% in First Quarter

The previous high for mobile phone sales was 153.7 million units in the first quarter of 2004. Gartner analysts said mobile phone sales grew in all regions.

“In the mature markets of Western Europe and North America replacement sales ensured a buoyant performance,” said Ben Wood, research vice president for mobile terminals research at Gartner. “The Asia/Pacific region reflected seasonal trends by virtue of strong sales associated with Chinese New Year and other festivals.” In addition, rapid growth in emerging markets, notably Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa and Latin America, further bolstered global sales, he said.
