Entertainment industry publication Variety reports that director Len Wiseman has signed on to helm Gears of War, a movie based on the video game from Epic Games. New Line Cinema nabbed the film rights to the game last March and tapped Australian screenwriter Stuart Beattie to write a screenplay. According to Variety, writer Chris Morgan (Wanted,Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift) will write the next draft of the screenplay. Game designer Cliff Bleszinski is on board for Epic Games to consult and executive produce.

Google Gears Jumps to Mobile Phones

Google Gears Jumps to Mobile Phones

If ever there were a device that needed the ability to work with online applications without being online, it’s those ever-temperamental mobile phones that can never keep a signal for as long as you need to get something done. Google Gears answered that call earlier this week by launching Google Gears for mobile phones, which allows users to work with Web 2.0 applications, minus the connectivity.

Like the ordinary version of Gears, Gears for mobile caches application data on a device to allow it to function without an active Internet connection. This means you can still, say, continue to tinker with a spreadsheet in an online office app, even when your connection goes south.

New Line Cinema has snapped up the film rights to Epic Games’ hit Xbox 360 title Gears of War and attached Australian screenwriter Stuart Beattie (Collateral), who will work with lead game designer Cliff Blezinski to craft a screenplay. Marty Bowen is on baord as a producer with partner Wyck Godfrey.

Gears of War sold more than three million copies in its first 10 weeks of availability; it also took over the top spot on Microsoft’s Xbox Live service and garnered numerous industry awards. The game is set on the planet Sera, where players take on the roles of soldiers in Delta Squad as they fight the Locust Horde, monstrous creatures which emerge from the depths of the planet.

Microsoft and Epic Games today announced that the Xbox 360 title action-shooter Gears of War has gone “triple platinum,” selling more than 3 million copies since the games’ introduction 10 weeks ago.

Gears of War is tracking to be one of the best-selling video games of all time and has established itself as the most successful new IP of the next generation,” said Jeff Bell, corporate vice president of Global Marketing for Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business Entertainment and Devices Division, in a release.

Gears Of War Clears 2 Mln Mark

Microsoft and Epic Games announced today that the Xbox 360-exclusive game Gears of War has now sold more than 2 million copies, making it the fastest-selling next-generation console game of 2006, and the fastest-selling Xbox-exclusive game to date.

“We’ve always held high hopes for Gears of War, but we never expected such an overwhelmingly positive response from critics and gamers all over the world,” said Epic Games president Michael Capps in a release. “I can’t describe how stoked our team is right now. Our fans can absolutely count on Epic to keep delivering new gameplay through Xbox Live.”

It seems like only a couple weeks ago we were noting the retail availability of Epic Games’ Gears of War for the Xbox 360—oh, wait, it was only two weeks ago. Backed by a massive advertising campaign (part of which features oddly juxtaposed game footage—with a giant spider!—with Gary Jules’ quiet cover of Tears for Fears’ “Mad World” from the Donnie Darko soundtrack) Gears of War is undeniably off to a strong start: Epic Games has announced that the title has already sold more than 1 million units worldwide, making it the fastest-selling original Xbox game to date.

Epic Games’ much-anticipated action shooting game Gears of War reaches its first retail outlets today, launching what Microsoft hopes will become the fastest-selling game to-date for its Xbox 360 console game system. Gears of War has been whetting the appetites of gamers for over half a year, and Microsoft and Epic are pumping up the excitement television ad placements, Microsoft’s recent “Match Made in Hell” promotion, and pre-release events throughout October.
