Yahoo Refuses Microsoft’s $44.6 Bln Offer

Last week, you might recall, Microsoft put in a $44.6 billion bid for Yahoo, stirring up fathers all through the computingand business worlds. That left the ball firmly in Yahoo’s court, and now, it appears, they’ve come up with a reply.   According to a number of news agencies and newspapers,Yahoo’s is set to say no to the offer.   Microsoft has offered $31 a share, although that was far higher than the trading prices of Yahoo’s shares. But the speculation is that Yahoois unlikely to consider any offer that’s under $40 a share, the Wall Street Journal has reported – a figure it hasn’t reached for two years.  As a result of the offer, Yahoo’s shares have risen, closing at $29.90 on Friday, while, conversely, Microsoft’s have fallen by 12%. That would seem to indicate that people thinkit’s either too big a move for the Redmond giant, or one that would take them away from the true focus of their business. Certainly, the knock-on effect is to lower Microsoft’s offer inreal terms, to a paltry $41.8 billion.

[Update; It's official, Yahoo has formally rejected Microsoft's unsolicited merger proposal, finding it "substantially undervalues" Yahoo and its brand. Yahoo's board did not elaborate how the company's management plans to turn the company around; Yahoo has been working a restructuring plan for the last 18 months which has yet to yield significant results.

Sony Unveils First Walkman Video Players

Sony Unveils First Walkman Video Players

Sony may have practically invented the portable media scene over two decades ago with the first Walkman cassette players, but in the market for MP3 players, its modern presence has hardly been dominating. The Japanese electronics giant attempted to step up its U.S. offerings with three new media players on Thursday: two that will be the first under the Walkman brand to play video, plus a third audio-only player.

The Sony NWZ-A810 and NWZ-S610 both sport QVGA screens that make full-screen video playback at 30 fps possible. The top-of-the-line A810 offers a 2-inch screen, while the S610 will pack a more modest 1.8-inch screen. Sony says the smaller model is targeted at a younger demographic. Both models will come in 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB varieties.

Eminem Sues Apple over iTunes Offerings

Not only is Apple in hot water over the iPhone’s pricy battery replacements, it has also landed in court with rapper Eminem’s management. According to The Detroit News, the dispute concerns Eminem’s songs on iTunes, which the artist’s management say actually infringe on copyrights.

Although Apple has been paying Eminem’s record label, Universal, about 70 cents per song for every download of his music, his music publisher and copyright manager allege that Universal only distributes his CDs, and isn’t authorized to allow music downloads.

Target Will Only Stock Blu-Ray Players?

In addition to Blockbuster placing its substantial weight behind Blu-Ray in the ongoing high-def format wars, the nation’s second-largest retailer will now assume the same position. Target announced on Thursday that its stores will only stock Blu-Ray players in the future, preferring not to pick up any stand-alone HD-DVD players.

Target would not cite the reason for its shift in policy, but its shelves are already devoid of HD-DVD players, meaning there won’t be any drastic product-pulling or fire sales. Company representatives deny that Target is taking a stance one way or the other on high-def content and trying to predict a winner. "We are not proclaiming one format vs. the other as the preferred consumer technology, and software will continue to be available to our guests in both the Blu-ray and HD-DVD format," Target spokeswoman Brie Heath told the Associated Press.

MySpace Takes Over Web’s Top Spot?

A year ago, people were shaking their heads when Rupert Murdoch shelled out $580 million dollars for teen-oriented online community site MySpace. Look who’s laughing now: according to Internet tracking firm Hitwise, MySpace has taken over the title as the number one site on the Web, accounting for 4.46 percent of all U.S. Internet visits during the week ending July 8. That puts Rupert Murdoch’s acquisition ahead of Yahoo Mail for the first time, and leaves the home pages for Internet portals like Yahoo, Google, and Hotmail in the dust.
