Gartner: Over One Bln Computers in Use

Gartner: Over One Bln Computers in Use

Research firm Gartner says it believes the total number of installed PCs worldwide has now surpassed one billion machines, meaning there’s roughly one computer in operation for every 6.7 people on the planet. Furthermore, Gartner estimates the annual growth rate of the total PC installed base worldwide will be growing by just under 12 percent a year, so the figure is likely to hit two billion by 2014.

Gartner’s definition of a PC includes desktop and notebook systems, but omits devices like PDAs and phones.

Vista Not a Big Factor in PC Sales

Vista Not a Big Factor in PC Sales

Market research firm Gartner has released estimates for 2007 worldwide computer sales, forecasting an overall 11.1 percent increase compared to 2006. But the surprise is that Gartner finds this increase is being driven by strong demand for PCs in emerging markets, while last year’s release of Windows Vista is not a strong factor in encouraging sales of new PCs.

“The release of Microsoft Windows Vista operating system at the end of January has, so far, failed to stimulate the market in the way many hoped,” said George Shiffler, research director for Gartner’s Client Platforms Markets Group. “Our market data suggest Vista has had very limited impact on PC demand or replacement activity. We don’t see Vista having a significant effect on these going forward unless Microsoft becomes much more aggressive in its marketing efforts.”

PC Forecast Slightly Rises

Gartner analysts previously projected worldwide PC shipments would increase 9.9 percent.

Worldwide mobile PC shipments are expected to grow 26.5 percent in 2005, while deskbased units are now forecast to grow 4.6 percent. Mobile PCs currently make up just under 30 percent of all PC shipments.

“Mobile PCs are continuing to attract more new users as mobile prices fall and wireless becomes more pervasive,” said George Shiffler, principal analyst for Gartner’s Client Platforms research. “Growing numbers of users are replacing their old desktops with more portable mobiles, and this is one of several factors helping to boost mobile PC growth.”

Gatner: PC Sales Could Be Slow This Holiday

Worldwide PC shipments are projected to total 51.9 million units in the fourth quarter of 2004, a 10.1 percent increase from the same period last year, according to a preliminary forecast by Gartner,Inc. While PC shipments will experience double-digit growth in the fourth quarter due to healthy shipments in the professional market, home sales this holiday season will be weaker than expectedbecause of increased competition from digital entertainment products.

“Aside from mobility, there is conspicuous lack of ‘must have’ new features for home PC users, and this is noticeably impacting home sales, especially replacements purchases,” said George Shiffler, principal analyst for Gartner’s Client Platforms research.

Gartner: 100 Million PCs Replaced In 2004

The volume of replacements in the next two years will surpass the number of units replaced in the run-up to Y2K in 1998 and 1999, Gartner said. In 2004, replacement units will drive global shipments to 186.4 million–an increase of 13.6 percent over 2003.

“Our first-quarter results suggest the…replacement cycle that vendors have been anticipating for more than a year is under way,” George Shiffler, principal analyst for Gartner’s client platforms research, said in a statement.
