HD DVD And Blu-Ray To Both Win

New digital delivery services are not likely to supplant the DVD business, but rather bring digital entertainment to people by adding either convenience or accessibility that complements what the”Packaged Goods” can provide, reports In-Stat. More consumers want instant access to video on their TV sets, portable devices and cell phone handsets, but DVDswill continue to be a popular medium and will continue to experience substantial growth. The worldwide value of all published DVD products is expected to grow with a compound annual growth rate of18.2%, from about $33 billion during 2004, up to $76.5 billion by 2009, the high-tech market research firm says.

Gigabit Ethernet Video Routers To Take Off

This market, at about $63 million worldwide in 2004, will soar to more than $930 million during 2008, the high-tech research firm reports.

“The capabilities of Gigabit Ethernet Video Routers are expanding to support advanced audio and video compression methods, and widening their features and functions to provide fully converged Internet Protocol networks that are capable of delivering an extended range of multiple services that go beyond the so-called ‘triple play’ of just video, voice, and high-speed data,” said In-Stat/MDR analyst Gerry Kaufhold. “These multi-play services include HDTV, local ad insertion, network PVR, switched broadcast, games-on-demand, and future services that will be developed for digital TV.”

Toshiba To Use Microtune Chip In Qosmio

Converging portable personal computing with high-grade audio-visual capabilities, the Qosmio combines the functionality of a PC, TV, CD player and DVD recorder in a versatile mobile entertainment platform. Microtune’s MT2050 tuner, integrated into the PC, functions as the radio frequency (RF) ‘gateway,’ permitting the reception of over-the-air broadcasts and cable TV.

Toshiba expects Qosmio PCs to be rolled out worldwide, with an expanded line-up of wider-screen version products to be introduced by the end of 2004. The products are available in the U.S. at www.Qosmio.com and through retail distribution channels, including computer superstores and consumer electronics stores.

PC-TV Tuner Market To Continue Growth

PC-TV Tuners permit consumers to tune-in television programs, and then capture, store, manage and distribute a wide range of video content on their PCs. PC-TV Tuners are key components in the rapidly emerging market for Entertainment PCs. New, high-performance Entertainment PCs (E-PCs) will set the stage to deliver amazing performance to video, audio, multimedia, and communications applications. Microsoft’s Media Center PCs, and new Media Center PC Extenders, will add further oomph to the growth. International markets will be key. Digital Terrestrial set top boxes use similar technology, and will enjoy strong growth in Europe, and will soon blast off in Asia.

ATI Unveils Mobile PCI Express Graphics

ATI Technologies Inc. today announced MOBILITY RADEON X600, the industry’s first mobile PCI Express graphics processor, along with AXIOM, a modular design innovation for PCI Express notebook upgradeability. ATI’s mobile PCI Express solutions will be employed by more than sixteen of the industry’s leading OEM and ODM designers including, Acer, Arima, ASUS, Clevo, ECS, eMachines, FIC, Gateway, HP, Inventec, LG, Mitac, Samsung, Quanta, Uniwill and Wistron. The launch of MOBILITY RADEON X600 and AXIOM will take place on June 3rd at a gala event in Taipei, Taiwan.
