Getac Roughs Up Its Rugged Notebooks and Tablets for Windows 7

Getac B300

Ruggedized PC maker Getac wants to make sure its customers can jump on the Windows 7 bandwagon from day one, and to that end has announced that its complete line of ruggedized notebook and tablet PCs are all compatible with Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system, and will begin shipping with Windows 7 on October 22, the same day the OS becomes available to consumers. Moreover, Windows 7’s multi-touch and gesture capability will improve the operation of Getac’s recently introduced resistive multi-touch technology so users can manage media, copy-and-paste, zoom, and rotate items onscreen using gestures—and unlike most touchscreen systems, Getac’s resistive touchscreens even work through heavy industrial gloves.

Getac 9213 Rugged Business Notebook

Getac 9213 Rugged Business NotebookRubber gaskets, shock-mounted hard drives and rugged exterior coatings may go a long way in making a notebook tough, but they certainly don’t flatter them on the scale. Most rugged notebooks weigh far more than their consumer-grade counterparts, leading to an interesting paradox: You can take them anywhere, but probably won’t want to.

Getac’s new 9213 rugged business notebook defies that expectation with a weight of just 3.9 pounds – not at all excessive for a machine in its 13.3-inch size class. Getac pulled it off with a magnesium alloy chassis, which is extremely strong for its weight, along with other light-but-tough components.

Getac 9213 Rugged Notebook Combines Small and Tough

Getac 9213 Rugged Notebook Combines Small and Tough

Ruggedized notebook computers can be a great thing for engineers, first responders, law enforcement, contractors, inspectors, or just about anybody who needs to take a computer into the boonies—whether urban or rural. They take the bumps and thumps and detritus of a hard knock life and keep on ticking a whole lot better than those fragile and fashionable notebooks all the cool kids are carrying around. But while ruggedized notebooks are built like tanks…they also weigh like tanks, making them a bit of a bear to haul around. Getac—an MiTAC subsidiary that spun out of Ge Aeorspace—aims to solve that problem with the Getac 9213 rugged notebook, which aims to put all the power of a traditional notebook computer in a lightweight, easily portable system that can still stand up to a tough life on the go.

Best of CTIA AwardThey’ve rolled up the neon-colored colored carpets, torn down the booth cities and flown home the booth babes. Now it’s time to look back at the highlights from this year’s CTIA Wireless 2009 conference. While some of this show’s best contenders had already been announced, manufacturers still managed to pull some surprising tricks out of their caps for Vegas. And laying hands on those previously photographed, but not-yet-handled phones was pretty exciting, too. Here are our 10 most memorable new products from the show floor, along with five honorable mentions that weren’t released for the show, but still managed to raise our eyebrows in person.
