Wal-Mart Jumpstarts Holiday Sales

Wal-Mart Jumpstarts Holiday Sales

Just as it did last year with a Friday sale that lured shoppers into its maze of fluorescent lighting for $350 laptops, Wal-Mart will once again begin its holiday sales early with a one-day shopping event to precede Black Friday. The company’s Saturday sale will include several high-profile deals, including a laptop for $298, a 46-inch Sanyo LCD HDTV for $798, and a PS3 that comes with a $100 gift card.

Specifications on the $298 laptop, a Compaq CQ50-139WM, have moved up significantly from the models offered as last year’s doorbusters. Though it will still get a single-core Intel Celeron M processor clocked at 2GHz, the CQ50 also gets 2GB of DDR2 RAM a 160GB hard drive, and Intel’s 4500MHD media accelerator.

Best Buy Offers Gift Cards to HD DVD Buyers

Sure, the format war between Blu-ray and HD DVD might be over, but the walking wounded are still among us: early adopters who chose the losing format. In a move to soften the blow—and shore up customer loyalty—electronics retailer Best Buy is offering $50 gift cards to customers who purchased an HD DVD player or HD DVD “attachment” (meaning, the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive) from a U.S. retail location before February 23, 2008. Even better, customers will get a $50 gift card for each eligible HD DVD item they purchased, so folks who bought multiple players are eligible for multiple gift cards. All told, Best Buy plans to give out more than $10 million in gift cards under the program.

Flat Screen TVs Could Be Most Wanted

“We conducted the survey to help determine what promotion to offer our resellers for outstanding sales efforts,” according to David Render, AccountMate’s chief operating officer. “We know that our resellers are very technical savvy, but we had no idea how strongly that would translate into their choice of personal Christmas gift,” he continued.

The company asked a random sample of resellers what their choice of personal Christmas gift would be this year. “They did not know that their responses would affect the promotion we would be offering,” Render said. “Otherwise it might have skewed their responses.”
