Gigabyte M912V Shrinks the Tablet PC

Gigabyte M912V Shrinks the Tablet PC

Taiwan’s Gigabyte has officially announced its M912V tablet PC, which takes the whole idea of a touchscreen-based, swivel-display notebook computer and crams it into a form factor more closely associated with a sub-notebook or the new flavor of Atom-powered “netbook” PCs.

The M912V sports an 8.9-inch, 1,280 by 768-pixel LCD touchscreen display (with LED backlighting) that can rotate 180 degrees to transform from a traditional notebook form factor to a tablet PC. The M912V packs an 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor and a 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drive offering up to 250 GB of storage. The unit also offers 1 GB of RAM, a 1.3 megapixel Web cam, integrated stereo speakers, Bluetooth and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi wireless connectivity, and an ExpressCard slot, and an option for HSDPA mobile broadband connectivity.

Gigabyte Enters Cellphone Market

“Gigabyte Communications, established last June, said it plans to launch its first mobile phone under the Gigabyte brand in the July-September period. The handset will be targeted at the high-endsegment, which accounts for about one-fifth of the nation’s NT$42 billion (US$1.35) market.

The company is also seeking opportunities to make phones for international brands outside the Asian market, Jesse Lee  a vice president of Gigabyte Communications, said in a phone interview.”

None of the new phones will support 3G services right away unfortunately. The company plans on adding a 120 new employees to help with the new phone division.

IPods In Short Supply During The Holidays

“The colorful 4-gigabyte iPod mini and the 20-gigabyte iPod are sold out at Amazon.com. Supplies at Circuit City stores are running out as soon as new shipments arrive every few days.

Shoppers at Best Buy’s online store are also out of luck on most iPod models, but that’s because Best Buy is giving priority of the inventory they do have for shoppers at retail stores, said Brian Lucas, a spokesman for the nation’s largest electronics retailer.”

Gigabyte N512 Review

Summary

The Gigabyte N512 is a very powerful and versatile laptop that should appeal to a large number of people. Gamers will be drawn to this system because of the ATI Radeon 9600 graphics adapter and the 512MB of system memory. Multimedia enthusiasts will be turned on by the plethora of USB and FireWire inputs as well as the media card reader, as long as a widescreen display is not necessary. And of course the everyday user will be happy with the longevity this system should provide them. The Intel processor is fast, the system memory is upgradeable, it has 802.11b/g WiFi capability and the LCD display is easy on the eyes and very vibrant at the same time.

Gigabyte B49GU Router Review

Summary

With a host of advanced features, Gigabyte’s B49GU is a SOHO router with a lot of promise for business users. Unfortunately, its lack of quality documentation and its issue with wireless dropouts and a general lack of wireless speed make it a less than stellar performer.

Based on the Atheros 802.11g chipset that supports Extreme-G speeds of up to 108Mbps, the B49GU was just as disappointing and erratic as the very similar D-Link DI-624. As a wired router, the Gigabyte B49GU is a solid performer with a lot of useful enhancements. But when you dig deeper into its feature set and take the wireless performance, or lack thereof, into account, the B49GU looks like a good idea that was poorly implemented and rushed to market.

Elpida Announces 1GB Notebook DDR Module

From Elpida’s press release:

Elpida Memory, Inc (Elpida), Japan’s leading global supplier of Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM), today announced that it has shipped the first 1 Gigabyte DDR2 small-outline dual in-line memory module (SO-DIMM) that brings low-power, high-density, high-performance and small form-factor benefits to notebook PC applications. Separately, Elpida has also shipped samples of its 256 Megabit DDR2 SDRAM device that will be utilized in server and desktop applications requiring lower density modules. Elpida’s extensive DDR2 product line will be displayed this week at the Intel Developer Forum, February 17-19, 2004.

Elpida Announces Highest Density Server RAM

From Elpida’s news release:

The 2 Gigabyte modules are the highest density available for the server market, and they offer high-speed performance with a data transfer rate of 4.3 Gigabytes per second (PC2-4300). Elpida’s newly developed stacked BGA (sBGA) technology creates a slim module (4.8 millimeter thickness) that increases air flow space between modules, thus improving thermal performance and reliability for server applications.
