School Says iPod Is A Must-Have

“At the Brearley School, a private school for girls on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, where Samantha is in the eighth grade, the iPod went from a “want” to a “must have” this year when its use was incorporated into foreign-language and classics courses. For about 300 girls in grades 7 through 12, the iPod is now required to do homework and classroom assignments.”

We are sure none of those students are complaining!

Teen Pleads Guilty In ‘Blaster’ Worm Attack

Jeffrey Lee Parson, 19, of Hopkins, Minn., is likely to face 18 months to three years behind bars after pleading guilty to one count of intentionally causing or attempting to cause damage to a protected computer. He also could be ordered to pay millions of dollars in restitution, Assistant U.S. Attorney Annette Hayes said.

With television and video games often blamed for contributing to the growing problem of obesity in children, video game makers and children’s TV companies are creating shows and games that motivate children to move around or offer story lines that encourage exercise.

Canadian Study Shows Downloads Hurt Music

Pollara also reported that 52 per cent of music “consumers” who don’t download had purchased music in the past month.

Only 35 per cent of those who were active downloaders had purchased music in the month prior to the survey.

The survey was commissioned by the Canadian Recording Industry Association, which has been claiming for several years that trading music files on-line has been hurting sales.

Skeptics Question Wi-Fi’s Viability

“Anyone trying to build a stand-alone business on Wi-Fi access should be worried,” said analyst John Yunker of Byte Level Research. “It’s not a stand-alone business, it’s an add-on to other communications businesses, the cable bill or the DSL bill.”

Wi-Fi, short for wireless fidelity, appeals most to people with laptops and personal digital assistants. It radiates an Internet connection to users within 300 feet

Microsoft Settles Class-Action Lawsuit

The world’s biggest software company said final terms of the settlement were still being worked out. The deal will be presented to the state court in early summer, company spokeswoman Stacy Drake said. She wouldn’t say if the settlement would affect earnings.

The settlement interrupted a jury trial that was expected to last several more weeks. Attorneys for the plaintiffs had said they were seeking as much as $505-million (U.S.) — and Minnesota law would have automatically tripled that, meaning Microsoft could have faced a potential payout of more than $1.5-billion, said Microsoft attorney David Tulchin.

Canadian Online Sales Up 40% Last Year

Last year, combined private and public sector sales on-line totalled $19.1-billion, a 40-per-cent increase over the previous year’s levels.

The latest number also continued the growth trend, building on 2002’s gain of 27 per cent.

Canadian Music Industry Appeals Ruling

On March 13, Judge Konrad von Finckenstein of the Federal Court dismissed a request brought by CRIA that some of Canada’s largest Internet service providers be forced to turn over confidential customer information, which CRIA believes could help it sue 29 Canadians for copyright infringement.

Pop-Up Software Maker Sues State Of Utah

In a lawsuit filed late Monday in 3rd District Court, WhenU.com Inc. argues that the new law violates its constitutionally protected right to advertise, while doing little to protect computer users’ privacy. The company wants the court to block the law from taking effect early next month.

Intel To Reduce Amount Of Lead In Chips

Intel plans to launch the new microprocessors and chipsets with just five percent of the lead used in its current products by the third quarter of 2004.

“Lead-free is required for the future. This is the right time for this launch of the technology,” Michael Garner, Intel’s director of materials technology operation, said on the sidelines of a chip seminar showcasing Intel’s latest technologies.
