U.S. cable operator Comcast has announced it plans to offer its customers a new application integrating email, voicemail, and instant messaging capabilities. Dubbed SmartZone, the Web-based service is a partnership with Hewlett-Packard and Plaxo, and builds on the open source Zimbra Collaboration Suite. Using SmartZone, users will be able to check their voice mail, send instant messages, manage their address book, plus send and receive email all from a single online location. The service is scheduled to debut later this year.

Comcast Offers Users Free Security Software
Comcast announced yesterday that its offering its broadband customers three McAfee computer security products—VirusScan, Personal FireWall Plus, and Privacy Service—for free. The products retail for about $115, but are commonly available bundled with other McAfee products for about $50. The McAfee products require Microsoft Windows XP Home, XP Pro, 2000 Pro, ME, or Windows 98 along with Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher. The McAfee security products are not available for Macintosh, Linux, other platforms.

Comcast today announced the launch of Comcast PhotoShow Deluxe, a service that provides a simple way to organize and share digital photos – but does it broadband-style.

Comcast Cable Internet Upgraded To 4Mbps
With Time Warner’s Road Runner announcing yesterday a boost of up to 6Mbps, Comcast says it is also now offering a higher-speed cable Internet service.
Today the company officially announced a 4Mbps speed tier as a new option for its High-Speed Internet service. This announcement comes within a year of Comcast doubling customer downstream speed to 3Mbps, at no additional cost – and establishing an industry benchmark.
Comcast To Offer On-Demand Video Games

Comcast today announced the launch of Games on Demand, a premium games on-demand service, provided through an agreement with Exent Technologies, that lets consumers enjoy blockbuster games on the Comcast.net portal.
Leveraging the power and convenience of Comcast High-Speed Internet, titles available through Games on Demand will offer single player and interactive gameplay across a wide range of genres. Available content will include everything from action games like Atari’s “Dead Man’s Hand” to educational games like Scholastic Media’s “Clifford Thinking Adventures” and “I SPY Fantasy.”
Comcast Offers Linksys Router/Modem Combo
Linksys, a division of Cisco Systems, Inc., today announced the deployment of the Linksys Wireless-G Cable Gateways as part of the Comcast Home Networking Platform. This teaming helped deliver theindustry’s first CableHome deployment, which includes a certified all-in-one networking hardware device –the Wireless-GCable Gateway (WCG200) – which makes it easy for households to share a cable broadband connection wired or wirelessly throughout the home.
Comcast, the nation’s top broadband provider, is offering “Comcast Home Networking†to its current and new high-speed Internet customers. Users who sign up for the service can receive a Linksys wireless gateway, along with network adapters for connecting up to five computers, professional installation, multiple levels of security, and increased downstream speed of up to 4Mbps. Customers can simply add the home networking program by calling, clicking or emailing Comcast customer service.
