PC Shipments Show First Drop in Five Years

PC Shipments Show First Drop in Five Years

According to research firm IDC, PC shipments were down 1.8 percent during the last quarter of 2008 and are expected to decline by more than 8 percent during the first half of 2008. The declines follow five years in which the sector almost always showed double-digit growth every year. However, IDC seems to detect what may be light at the end of the tunnel: the research firm expects small positive growth in PC shipments by the end of the year, making the total decline for 2009 somewhere around 4.5 percent.

Gartner: PC Sales Growth Slowed in Q4

Gartner: PC Sales Growth Slowed in Q4

Analysis first Gartner has released its figures on worldwide PC shipments during the fourth quarter of 2008…and, as many expected, the news is not good. Worldwide, PC shipments during the fourth quarter of 2008 were up just 1.1 percent compared to the last quarter of 2007, marking the worst growth rate the industry has seen since 2002. But there were some bright spots: mini notebooks are hot, and Acer and Toshiba both posted substantial gains.

Online tracking company comScore has released new figures that show Facebook striding ahead to be top of the social network sites. It hit 132 million unique visitors for a remarkable 153 percent growth rate.

By comparison, MySpace managed 113 million unique visitors, scoring just 3 percent growth. The big surprise, and coming up on the outside, has been the largely unknown Hi5. It might have only had 56 million visitors, but its growth was 100 percent.

PC Shipments Climbed at End of 2007

PC Shipments Climbed at End of 2007

Growth in the personal computer market proved to be strong in the final quarter of 2007, according to new figures from market analysis firms Gartner and IDC. Although the companies use slightly different methods to quantify sales—and come up with somewhat different numbers—both agree growth was well in the double-digit range, with Gartner calculating a 13.4 percent increase for the quarter, and IDC finding 15.5 percent growth. And both firms agree a resurgent Dell has reclaimed its top spot for sales in the United States, although rival Hewlett Packard maintained its top position in worldwide PC sales.

By 2011, Notebooks Will Rule Computing

A new market research report from IDC forecasts that laptop and notebook computers will account for half off all PCs worldwide by the year 2011.

IDC forecasts that overall computer unit sales will continue to increase, with sales of desktop systems continuing to grow through at least 2011. However, laptop and notebook sales will grow faster, with a compound annual growth rate forecast at 16.1 percent, compared to just 3.8 percent growth for desktop systems over the same period.

Survey: Travelling Wi-Fi Users Stay Online

A new report from Ireland’s Research and Markets shows that while both 3G mobile networks and Wi-Fi connectivity serve mobile users, some 60 percent of Wi-Fi users sometimes or always make their travel plans with Wi-Fi availability in mind.

Although primarily a market study, 3G and Wi-Fi: In Search of the Sweet Spot highlights some interesting trends; while quarter-on-quarter growth for shipments and revenue for Wi-Fi equipment is slowing down, notebook computers are used for wireless data communications almost twice as often as cell phones. Moreover, while over one third of Wi-Fi users report that they exclusively use only free Wi-Fi connections (and nearly 18.9 percent use Wi-Fi only at home or at work), over 60 percent said they use commercial Wi-Fi hotspots when they’re on the go.

Video Game Sales Up 23 Percent

“Growth was lead by portable video game hardware, NPD said, with a 162 percent rise on a dollar basis. That came from the launch of two new handheld game players, Nintendo Co. Ltd.’s DS and Sony Corp.’s PlayStation Portable.

All categories were higher on both a dollar and unit basis, NPD said. The biggest was console games, at more than $1 billion in sales, a 7 percent growth rate. Most analysts expect about 5 percent growth for the year. “

PC Market Approaches 11% Growth

Total shipments rose 10.9% year on year in the first quarter to 46.1 million, roughly 1% above forecast. Continued growth in EMEA and in portable PCs were the primary drivers.

“First quarter results demonstrate that demand remains healthy going into the new year,” said Loren Loverde, director of IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. “Although the market is expected to slow later this year, demand for portables, system replacements, and growth in emerging geographies continue to drive expansion.”

MP3 Player Shipment to Reach 18M in 2005

Jupiter Research reported that U.S. shipments of MP3 players will grow 35% to 18.2 million in 2005 and maintain a compound annual growth rate of over 10% through 2010, reaching an installed base of56.1 million by then, up from 16.2 million in 2004. MP3 players will reach critical mass this year, fueling demand for digital music services and stores.

“Apple shows no signs of losing momentum,” said Michael Gartenberg, VP and Research Director at JupiterResearch. “The iPod is a consumer phenomenon. Apple dominates this sector and will dominate portable MP3 player growth over the medium term,” added Gartenberg. Mostly due to the iPod’s success, JupiterResearch has raised its near-term forecast, but projects that flash-based player shipments will surpass those of hard-drive models in 2007.
