Logitech’s Wireless PlayStation Guitar Controller is Back in Black

Logitech

Peripheral and accessories maker Logitech has announced its Logitech Wireless Guitar Controller for PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 systems…and like the earlier Premier Edition controller, it’s compatible with all Guitar Hero and Guitar Hero World Tour games. The controller is designed to land at the high end of the fake-guitar universe, featuring a rosewood fretboard, a Floyd-Rose-esque whammy bar for players’ dive-bombing pleasure, and a noise-dampening design for the strum bar and buttons.

“Logitech’s new guitar controller delivers the same unparalleled Guitar Hero experience offered by our previous Premiere Edition to an even broader group of gamers and at a great value,” said Logitech’s product marketing director for gaming Ruben Mookerjee, in a statement. “Everything about the Logitech Wireless Guitar Controller is premium.”

Van Halen Might As Well Jump into Guitar Hero

Van Halen Might As Well Jump into Guitar Hero

News dribblets about Activision’s Guitar Hero franchise are falling with the regularity of a broken faucet: first the company announces three new games—including DJ Hero—then casually mentions it’s looking into developing a Guitar Hero reality television series or concert tour package. Now, Activision has more-or-less confirmed what most people in the gaming industry knew already: following on the heels of Guitar Hero: Metallica, Activision is working on Guitar Hero: Van Halen.

Van Halen was, of course, one of the largest arena rock and FM radio acts of the 1980’s, and (despite a long period of inactivity and ongoing personnel shifts) has maintained considerable popularity, most recently demonstrated by a 2008 concert tour with flamboyant frontman David Lee Roth again at center stage.

Scratch Fever: Activision Announces DJ Hero

Although games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band are certainly popular, not everyone wants to sling a six-string or try to win points fake-shredding along to old fogey dinosaur rock. Darnit, some music has moved on from the 1950s tech of electric guitars: where’s the hip-hop, the modern r&b, the house, the electronica? Where’s the popping and scratching and the DJ with the turntables?

Verizon Turns Up Its Online Media Store with MP3s

Verizon Turns Up Its Online Media Store with MP3s

Consumers have been complaining about the problems associated with DRM technology on their music files: songs can’t be transferred between devices, shared with friends, backed up easily, and (in some cases) quick working altogether because an online music service decided to call it quits. Verizon Wireless has apparently listened, and has joined the DRM-free bandwagon in announcing more than 5 million MP3 tracks are now available from its Online Media Store.

Gibson Gets Shredded in Guitar Hero Lawsuit

Gibson Gets Shredded in Guitar Hero Lawsuit

The U.S. District Court for the Central District of California has issued a ruling that Activision’s Guitar Hero franchise does not infringe on a 1999 Gibson patent covering simulating a musical performance using a 3D headset display and stereo speakers. As, it seems, with any legal action regarding guitar maker Gibson, the procedural path of the case has been rife with hiccups, mis-steps, and obstinacy, but the court has finally ruled that Guitar Hero is in the clear because “Guitar Hero controllers are toys that represent other items,” rather than being musical instruments themselves. Furthermore, the court found that Gibson’s patent applies only to virtual instruments that produce some sort of analog audio output: instruments which produce MIDI data aren’t covered.

Gibson Debuts New Dark Fire Robot Guitar

Gibson Debuts New Dark Fire Robot Guitar

Games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band might be planting the seeds for a whole new generation of musicians…and venerable guitar maker Gibson wants to be out there with technology that will appeal to the digital generation. To that end, the company has just introduced Dark Fire, a second-generation of its Robot Guitar product line—introduced a year ago and updated last April—that features a motorized tuner setup that can both tune the guitar to pitch, but also switch between tunings one the fly, letting players quickly move from standard tuning to things like Drop D and DADGAD without (ahem) missing a lick.

Guitar Hero World Tour Arrives With A Party

Guitar Hero World Tour Arrives With A Party

Guitar Hero World Tour, the fourth part of the successful Guitar Hero franchise, went on sale in the UK on Friday, heralded by a launch party with music by metalcore band Bullet for My Valentine, while attendees could pretend to be rock stars by performing for the crowd.

Neversoft’s Guitar Hero World Tour boasts some changes from its predecessors. The look of the guitar has been changed, and it now has a touch-sensitive panel for those especially fancy fretboard flourishes. But now there’s also a drum kit and microphone, in a move reminiscent of Rock Band, and more than 80 new tracks from major bands like Korn (and even Fleetwood Mac for the nostalgia factor).

Logitech Unveils Wireless Guitar Controller

Logitech Unveils Wireless Guitar Controller

Following in the footsteps of Starpex and other premium Guitar Hero controller manufacturers, Logitech unveiled its Wireless Guitar Controller Premiere Edition on Thursday. The high-end digital axe uses authentic materials, including a wood neck, rosewood fingerboard and metal frets to improve upon the plastic controllers that come with the game.

Besides taking on a classier appearance and feel, the Premiere Edition picks up premium internal hardware from Logitech. For instance, the rubber-dome technology used in its fret board controls is the same used in Logitech keyboards, helping minimize noise, and it uses a 2.4GHz transmitter to give it a wireless connection with about 30 feet of range. Logitech also includes a neck slide and star power button for use in World Tour.

Guitar Controllers Get Girly with Aly & AJ

Rock and roll is often characterized as a boy’s sport, but even from its earliest days (Wanda Jackson, anyone?) the girls have been showing they can keep up with the boys just fine, thank you very much. But the same can’t be said of the still nascent music video game market, where both games and accessories have catered strongly to the predominantly-male video game crowd. So Performance Designed Products (PDP) teams up with teen pop star sisters Aly & AJ to create two new guitar controllers aimed especially at female gamers.
