Microsoft Announces Three Halo 3 Editions

Microsoft Game Studios and Bungie Studios today released more details on the upcoming Xbox 360 title Halo 3. Gamers will have their choice of Standard Edition ($60), Limited Edition ($70) and the Legendary Edition ($130).

The Legendary Edition will be released in limited quantities and arrive in a Spartan helmet case, along with two bonus disks full of supplemental content. The first disk will provide exclusive, behind-the-scenes footage and videos, including a high-definition “Making of ‘Halo 3’” documentary showcasing the Bungie team making the game, numerous high-definition featurettes documenting the creative design processes involved in developing the game and a look at some early game concepts as they evolved through the game’s development. The disk will also include an audio-visual calibration tool custom designed by the Halo 3 graphics and audio team to make the most of gamers’ high-definition home theaters.

Xbox Live Reaches 1.4M Members

The success of Xbox Live reinforces a stellar holiday season for the Xbox platform, which saw Xbox lead competitors in consoles sales, according to recently released data from NPD Funworld.* Other highlights from NPD Funworld include these:

  • Monthly share for Xbox has grown year-to-year every month for 14 consecutive months, climbing 11 share points to 37 percent in December.
  • Xbox was the onlyplatform to see year-to-year growth during the fourth quarter of 2004 and the full calendar year 2004, while Xbox competitors and the overall market declined year over year for both time periods.

Halo tops three million sales worldwide

If someone had told us that Macworld 1999 would herald the launch of a game that would go on to spearhead Microsoft’s push into the console games market, we would have demanded to know what they were drinking, and where the hell we could get some. And yet on July 21st, 1999, in front of a lot of very pretty but functionally incapable artists who believe Microsoft should be written with a dollar sign (only joking, Mac fellows!), Myth developer Bungie stood up and announced what would go on to become Halo: Combat Evolved, the most popular Xbox game there is, and one of the most talked about games in living memory. On Monday, Microsoft announced that Halo has sold more than three million copies worldwide.
