Toshiba Brings New Laptops To CES

Toshiba has brought several new laptops, as well as refreshing its Satellite series, to CES this year.

“This is an exciting time for the consumer electronics community—we’re dealing with a generation that is technically sophisticated, and responds favorably to innovation,” said Jeff Barney, vice president and general manager of Digital Products Division, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc. “That’s exactly our mandate at Toshiba: We deliver laptops, devices and accessories that combine entertainment with innovative technologies, and every product on display at this show demonstrates those core values.”

Harman Kardon GLA-55 2.0-Powered Speaker System

We’ve seen speakers clad in Rosewood, African Blackwood and piano black rubbed out with the painstaking French polish technique before, but none replicate quite the look, we think, of Harmon Kardon’s new GLA-55 2.0 loudspeakers. With slender, jewel-like bodies cut from real glass – not acrylic – they look almost otherworldly in design.

Besides creating a stunningly different aesthetic value, the material chosen for the speaker carcass, which Harmon says is the same used in bulletproof glass, reduces resonance thanks to its stiffness, increasing bass performance and cutting down on distortion.

Harman Kardon Introduces Cheaper Nav System

Harman Kardon Introduces Cheaper Nav System

Audio manufacturer Harman Kardon is expanding its line of car electronics with the GPS-300 Guide + Play. Much like Mio’s recently introduced C520, Harman Kardon’s GPS-300 finds its niche by offering both GPS navigation and digital media playback in one device.

Harman Kardon introduced the GPS-300 as a budget-conscious alternative to its big brother, the GPS-500. “Early response to our recently-introduced Harman Kardon GPS-500, the first portable navigation device to incorporate a consumer-friendly digital audio and video player, has been very enthusiastic,” the company’s press release states. “With the GPS-300, customers who want full-coverage GPS navigation without a full-fledged video player can now get the high-speed performance, superior ease-of-use, and four-inch widescreen graphic display of the GPS-500 at the breakthrough price of $299.99.”

Harman Kardon Drive + Play 2

Harman Kardon, makers of quality home and car audio products, debuted sometime ago a robust in-car iPod audio solution known as the Drive + Play. Something apparently has gone well enough with this gadget that they are getting ready to put to market an even more feature laden iPod car system called the Drive + Play 2.

The Drive + Play 2 is designed to provide comprehensive access of your Apple iPod’s audio collection through your car entertainment system. This Harman Kardon offering includes several components, such as a color display, wireless control knob and power adapter.

Summer Games

Summer is here, and you know what that means. Sand, sun, fun… Not to mention a guaranteed three-month drought when it comes to top-quality videogames.   The problem in a nutshell: Everyyear about this same time, average yokels like you and I power down the PlayStation, round up the family, pile into the Range Rover (OK, Hyundai) and head for greener pastures. Similarly, sales ofinteractive entertainment software taper off during June, July and August, cyclically leading up to a massive holiday rush that starts building steam in September.   But rather than bemoan thestate of the industry – it’s been this way for three decades, and unless America collectively decides November’s actually a good time to visit scenic Siberia after all, nothing’s changing– I come to praise it. Or rather, shine the media spotlight on a few worthy games that, despite being lumped into less active trading months, deserve a little attention this season.   Mindyou, I’m not saying the following contenders are worthy of telling the wife where she can shove that cruise or (more likely) "long-awaited" trip to the in-laws. Just that they’ll provide ahandy, instant source of amusement if you: A. Burn easily B. Are sweat/exercise-averse and C. Don’t feel like flying 10 hours just to shove through customs terminals crammed with hordes of stalearmpit-scented Europeans after dropping a mortgage payment to reach the other side of the Atlantic.   Street Fighter Alpha Anthology For: PlayStation 2 From: Capcom www.capcom.com $29.99   Beat buddies senseless in four of yesteryear’s finest 2D slugfests, specifically Street Fighter Alpha, Street Fighter Alpha2, Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold, and Street Fighter Alpha 3. For maximum enjoyment, trytag-teaming the epic (which chronicles Sparrow’s mythical exploits) with an equally swashbuckling friend…   City Life For: PC From: CDV www.cdvus.com $39.99   Juggle budgets, construction jobs and political upheaval in a clever simulation that casts you as civil planner and mayor of a thrivingmetropolis. Create housing and work for your inhabitants, whom you’ll observe going about individualized daily routines, but beware. Differing social classes (fringe culture elements, upper-classsnobs) don’t mingle.   Tekken: Dark Resurrection For: PlayStation Portable From: Namco Bandai www.namco.com $39.99   Wham, bam, thank you ma’am– this jaw-dropping, mano-a-mano martial arts brawler isn’t just a spin-off of the popular coin-op scrapping series. VoIP and Internet Phone Services Compared

What is VoIP

VoIP is one of those mysterious acronyms that almost everyone has seen by now. If you’ve read or watched TV ads for Vonage or any of the other mushrooming broadband telephone services, or read about eBay’s acquisition of Skype, you’re familiar with it. You might have experienced it without even knowing it.

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol, a way of having a phone conversation over the Internet by sending packets of data rather than impulses, making it very different from the traditional telephone method. It became possible with the advent of high-speed broadband connections, and nowadays it’s pretty much a fact of life—one that can, and will, significantly lower your phone bills.
