Video Ads Come To Magazines

Video Ads Come To Magazines

It sounds like something out of the Harry Potter books. Okay, it is something out of the Harry Potter books. But next month will see the first-ever video ads appearing on the pages of a magazine, as some copies of the September 18 issue of Entertainment Weekly in LA and New York will have video-in-print ads, the BBC reports.

The screens are slim line, about the size of a cell phone battery, and will have rechargeable batteries, with the chip activated when the page is turned. Each chip can hold around 40 minutes of video. The first ads will be from Pepsi and CBS.

Although no announcement of made of which platforms the game would be for, expect it for all of them.

Gamers can be Lego versions of all the main characters from the books during their first four years at Hogwarts, with all types of school activities, as well as visiting other locations from the books.

EA To Cut 500 Jobs

EA To Cut 500 Jobs

Electronic Arts might publish some of the most popular video games, but it’s not immune to the financial hard times that are around. After warning that profits will be lower than expected, it said that it will be shedding over 500 jobs, about 6% of its work force, the BBC reports. On the announcement EA saw its share price tumble 20%, closing at $22.78.

EA blamed higher development and marketing costs, as well as delays to the new Harry Potter game, although it said both Spore and NFL 09 has been successful.

Windows 7: Kicking Mac OS Butt?

There is a lot of bad blood this year between Microsoft and Apple. Apple has aggressively launched a negative political-style marketing campaign against the PC giant. While this advertising blitz – you know, the “I’m a PC/I’m a Mac” shtick – has been well executed and very entertaining, it’s also had an uneXPected side-effect as well. In short, it’s lit a huge fire under the thousand or so people developing Microsoft’s next operating system, Windows 7, and for the first time in over a decade, they’re properly focused on slapping Apple upside the head.

GTA IV Hits Guinness World Records

GTA IV Hits Guinness World Records

Grand Theft Auto IV racked up the units and bucks as soon as it went on sale on April 29th, but it made its creators very happy when it was announced yesterday that the video game, that’s barely in the stores, had broken two world records.

Guinness World Records announced that the game had qualified for records as Highest Grossing Video Game in 24 Hours and Highest Revenue Generated by an Entertainment Product in 24 Hours. On its first day of release GTA IV sold a staggering 3.6 million copies, which brought in a total of $310 million.

AOL Reveals Top Searches of 2007

AOL Reveals Top Searches of 2007

As 2007 winds to a close, pop culture commentators look every which way to capture the spirit of the year – and what better way than by looking at what people put in that little white search box on the Web? AOL recently peeled off the wraps on its own statistics to reveal what Americans were obsessed with this year.

In the field of gadgets, Apple took top honors with the iPhone and iPod placing first and second, respectively. The rankings of the Ninteno Wii and Sony PlayStation 3 reflected sales, with the Wii slipping in at third on the list, and the PS3 appearing nowhere on the top 10. Other hot tech searches (besides generic terms like “computers” and “cell phones”) included TracFone, XM Radio, PSP and Xbox.

Intel Buys Physics Developer Havok

In an unexpected move, chipmaking giant Intel has announced it is acquiring Havok, Inc., a leading developer of physics and animation tools mostly used in video games and other digital media. Terms of the aquisition were not revealed. Under the deal, Havok will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Intel, and continue to develop solutions for the gaming and movie industries.

“Havok is a proven leader in physics technology for gaming and digital content, and will become a key element of Intel’s visual computing and graphics efforts,” said Renee J. James, VP and general manager of Intel’s Software and Solutions Group, in a statement. “Havok will operate its business as usual, which will allow them to continue developing products that are offered across all platforms in the industry.”

Nintendo Dominates UK Games Sales

Nintendo Dominates UK Games SalesIf you want proof that Nintendo is on a roll these days, just look at the British video game charts. Eight of the top 10 titles are exclusives for either thecompany’s Wii or DS gaming systems. The other two are multi-platform games, which can also be played on Nintendomachines.   That said, the cross-platform Transformers game –based on the movie, which was based on the TV show for kids – has the top spot, showing the power of cross media marketing (theother multi-platform game also comes from a film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix).   Of the other eight titles, Pokemon Diamond (for the DS) is in the number two slot, with Wii Playcoming in third.   It all underscores the success Nintendo has enjoyed recently. The Wii has sold over nine and a quarter million units since it was introduced last year. That compares to 10million Xvox 360s, but that unit has been available for a year longer. The Ds, a handheld device, has sold some 45 million units in three years.   The popular Brain Training series has twotitles in the best sellers (Brain Training and More Brain Training), while Pokemon also has Pokemon Pearl, all for the DS.

EA Introduces Casual Gaming Division

If you’re the kind of gamer who wonders how level 60 is even possible in World of Warcraft, enters online games of Counter-Strike to be killed in four seconds, and fires up Flash games on the 10-year-old family desktop to pass time, Electronic Arts is targeting you. The company announced their new Casual Entertainment division on Tuesday, which will be dedicated to producing games for people who… well, just don’t care that much.
