Hasbro Sues Scrabulous Makers

The game Scrabulous is one of the most popular apps on Facebook, having been around for a year and a half, with a fan base of 40,000 and half a million users each day. It’s also one of the most controversial, as it seems to be very close to the game Scrabble (which is relatively new on the social networking site and boasts just 10,000 daily users and 5,000 fan on Facebook), whose rights are owned by Hasbro.

Hasbro has already asked Facebook to remove Scrabulous, and now it’s filed suit against the game’s creators, Rajat Agarwalla and Jayant Agarwalla, as well as their company, for intellectual property theft.

The copyright infringement tiff between game makers Hasbro and Mattel over the popular Scrabulous online game has come to a sanctioned end, with game giant Electronic Arts has announced an official version of the classic board game Scrabble will appear on the social networking site Facebook later this month…but it’s available now on EA’s own Pogo online gaming site.

“Scrabble is one of the best social game brands in existence and we’ve worked diligently with the Hasbro team to ensure that regardless of the platform you’re playing, you’ll be able to enjoy a world class version of Scrabble with friends or family,” said EA Hasbro Games general manager Chip Lange, in a statement. “We’re delighted to be bringing communities everywhere access to one of their favorite games.”

EA To Digitize Classic Board Games

EA To Digitize Classic Board GamesWant to play Monopoly or Scrabble on your game console? From next year you should be able to, as Electronic Arts (EA) and Hasbrohave inked a deal that means classic board games will be going digital.   Hasbro has given EA the rights to develop digital games based up a number of games, including Monopoly, Scrabble,Yahtzee, Nerf, Tonka and Littlest Pet Shop. The first games will roll out next year and the agreement runs until the end of 2013. No financial terms were disclosed.   In a world where hardcoregames are becoming more graphically complex, this is a move definitely designed to appeal to the casual gamer, an ever-increasing segment of the market, as the popularity of the Wii has shown. Bringing perennial favorites into the marketplace could increase the popularity of casual gaming, especially among older people.

“The gaming market has never been more primed for a revolution in how families enjoy games,” said Kathy Vrabeck, president of the EA Casual Entertainment Label. “Hasbro is the ideal partner to help propel this change. Their games define fun. These are games that we all love and remember from our childhoods. The combination of EA’s market leadership in the interactive space and Hasbro’s timeless franchises is a perfect partnership for today’s market. Together, EA and Hasbro can create the next generation of fun for a new wave of kids and families.”

EA and Hasbro Strike a Deal for Games

Electronic Arts and Hasbro announced Friday that they will team up to offer titles for casual gamers based on the toymaker’s board games and other brands. EA now holds exclusive worldwide rights to make games based on intellectual properties like Monopoly, Scrabble, Yahtzee, Nerf, and Tonka.

Upcoming titles will be developed by EA’s casual entertainment label, which was just formed in June. “The gaming market has never been more primed for a revolution in how families enjoy games,” said Kathy Vrabeck, president of the label. “Hasbro is the ideal partner to help propel this change. Their games define fun. These are games that we all love and remember from our childhoods.” EA hopes to release Hasbro titles in the 2008 calendar year.

Activision to Publish Transformers Titles

Hasbro yesterday said they’d issued a license to video game publisher Activision which grants the latter publishing rights to develop titles based upon the Transformers brand. The first title set to be released from this agreement is tied into the July 4, 2007 release of the live action Transformers movie.

Activision, said Hasbro, will develop Transformers gaming titles for console, handheld and PC systems. Hasbro, who reacquired the Transformers video game rights from Infogrames in June 2005, plans to expand the best selling boys’ action brand reach through ring tones, mobile gaming and a host of other products.

Furby Fanatics: It’s Almost Time

Yes boys and girls, Furby is back. Hasbro first broke the news that they were bringing back the Gizmo gremlin look-alike in February. Today they announced more details on the pending release, including a pre-sales event for dire hard Furby fans.

This pre-sales event, according to Hasbro, will involve 1,000 of the “evolved creatures”. Those eager to get their hands on the small furry monsters which terrorized so many in the late 90s will get their chance on the toy company’s sales website Monday June 13 at 10 a.m. EDT. The lucky 1,000 will receive their Furbys shortly after July 15, which is approximately two weeks before the rest of us will probably not line up to buy one. Also accompanying the 1,000 fur balls will be a certificate of authenticity.
