Blu-ray, HD DVD Joust at CeBIT

The so-called “format war” between high-definition DVD formats HD DVD and Blu-ray might not be a shooting match on most days, but when you add a little gasoline to the fire in the form of an international trade show like CeBIT, the camps seem to enjoy an occasional tactical engagement.

Sony has been bragging lately that the high-definition war is all but over, declaring themselves the winner based on recent U.S. sales data and the fact every PlayStation 3 game console ships with a Blu-ray drive. Today at CeBIT, the Blu-ray Disc Association chairman Frank Simonis upped the ante even further, declaring that not only will Blu-ray beat out HD DVD, it will completely do in the standard DVD. “Within three years it will just be Blu-ray,” he said at the CeBIT trade show.

Thomson’s Film Grain Technology Approved

Two major studios, part of the DVD Steering Committee, namely Walt Disney Company and Warner Bros., support adoption of the technology.

Film Grain is an important enhancement for delivering HD content to consumers. Film Grain technology was specified and developed by Thomson’s research group in Princeton in collaboration with Thomson’s Technicolor business.

The Film Grain tool is a set of algorithms that automatically estimates film grain parameters, thereby enabling the editing and manipulation of picture quality after high compression processing. This enables low bit rate transfers and limited storage capacity for HD videos while preserving the creator’s touch. Thomson will present a demonstration of Film Grain at the CES trade show to be held in Las Vegas from January 6th-9th 2005.

DVD Developers Get Ready For Format Battle

CNN has a good article talking about how the two formats will compete with the loser potentially losing blowing millions in research and development.

“Two rival “next generation” DVD formats look set to be launched onto the marketplace next year.

Both are backed by powerful and well-known Japanese manufacturers, with each staking their claim to an industry worth billions of dollars.

And with the DVD market unlikely to support parallel formats, the loser faces the prospect of squandering millions spent on research, development and marketing costs.”

Sanyo To Adopt HD DVD Standard

Sanyo will develop next generation DVD players and recorders using the HD DVD standard, and aims to first launch in Japan HD DVD players in 2005: and recorders in 2006: and then expand into the NorthAmerican market.

Shift on demand from conventional VCRs to hard disc recorders and combo-type DVD recorders has gained momentum, and the DVD player/recorder market has gotten off to a quick start. Electronics Industries Association of Japan research forecasts DVD recorder shipments of 10 million units in 2004. Along with increase of flat panel TVs that can handle Hi-Vision content, increase in demand is expected for recording high-definition software.
