Toshiba Buys Fujitsu’s HDD Business

Toshiba Buys Fujitsu

The hard disk drive (HDD) is tough at the moment. Even the biggest players like Seagate and Western Digital are cutting costs and shedding staff.

Now the number six seller, Fujitsu, has agreed to sell its loss-making HDD business to rival (and number five seller) Toshiba, according to The Register.

But what exactly will Toshiba be buying? Evidently the read/write head manufacturing isn’t part of the deal, and Fujitsu has said its HDD head manufacturing operation at Nagano, Japan will go back to just making printed circuit boards for servers and telecoms kit. None of the Fujitsu employees working on HDD will lose their jobs.

Toshiba Leads in CE HDD Shipments

Toshiba was tooting their horn yesterday as they announced that, according to recent data from research firm IDC, they had topped all hard disk drive manufacturers in consumer electronics HDD shipments for the third quarter of 2005.

The data from IDC reveals that Toshiba had a global market share of 27.5 percent for all HDDs shipped into consumer electronics and 43.9 percent share when excluding the 3.5” drive category. Toshiba’s 2.5”, 1.8” and 0.85” HDDs have found or will be finding their way into a variety of devices, including mobile PCs, GPS systems, mobile phones, PDAs, digital still cameras, MP3 players and automobile entertainment systems.

Philips GoGear is Back in Black

Philips GoGear is Back in Black

Arguably one of the better players on the market, the new Philips GoGear HDD1630 and HDD6330 hope to carve out a niche of their own – that is if Philips can get the software right this time. The HDD1630 features 6 GB of storage for up to 3,000 songs, 1,600 pictures; while the HDD6330 features storage capacity of 30 GB to hold up to 15,000 songs or 8,400 pictures.

Both players feature backlit sensory touchpads and Philips’ acclaimed SuperScroll system for speedy and precise navigation through a music collection. Listeners can just tap or drag their finger along the touch-sensitive strip to maneuver through their library of music and photos.

Sony To Launch New PSX Models

“The new products will come in two types: the DESR-7700 with a 250GB HDD and the DESR-5700 with a 160GB HDD. Both models use the same hardware used in the conventional PSX. The price will be open, but the company expects it to be around Â¥80,000 and around Â¥60,000, respectively.

The HDD DVD recorders dub an MPEG-2 video data file recorded on the HDD onto MemoryStick after converting it to an MEPG-4 file. There are two types of dubbing mode: high-resolution mode, with the frame rate of 30 fps and the encoding rate of 768 kbps, and low-resolution mode, with the frame rate of 15 fps and the encoding rate of 384 kbps.”

Cell Phone HDD’s Survive 1.5-Meter Drop

“The reason equipment with a 1-inch HDD is becoming so common suddenly is the sharp drop in price per unit storage capacity. A 4-Gbyte drive currently runs at between US$100 and US$120 from Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, Inc (HGST) of the US, or for about US$90 from GS Magicstor Inc of China. This works out at between 2.5 and 3.3 per Mbyte.

A slightly smaller drive, the 0.85-inch HDD, has appeared recently, with Toshiba Corp of Japan sample-shipping its 2-Gbyte model in August 2004. The first mobile music players featuring 0.85-inch drives are expected to be released in early 2005, although the price per Mbyte will probably be slightly higher than for existing 1-inch HDDs. “

Toshiba Develops 60GB 1.8′ Hard Drives

These drives also feature improved shock tolerance, power consumption and vibration control for better performance in mobile consumer electronics devices.

To achieve this industry-leading capacity, Toshiba has set a new benchmark for areal density in the 1.8-inch HDD category at 93.5 gigabits per square inch. This has allowed Toshiba to pack 30GB of data onto a single 1.8-inch platter, an increase of 50 percent over current models, delivering drives that are ideally suited for in-demand consumer electronics products such as mobile audio players and mobile notebook PCs.

DVD Forum Adopts aacPlus [HE AAC] Codec

“The approval opens the way for future DVD-Audio content to be transferred to compressed-music portables and to home HDD music jukeboxes, said David Frerichs, GM for the U.S. arm of CodingTechnologies, based here.

Coding Technologies, a Forum member, expects September adoption by the Forum of a digital-rights management technology to protect a DVD-Audio disc’s compressed-music zone. The DRM technology will be DVD-Audio’s CPPM [Content Protection for Prerecorded Media] copy-control technology, but it will be revised to incorporate new rules, the company said.

Lite-On To Produce HDD+DVD Recorder

Other Taiwanese makers, including BenQ, Mustek Systems, MET Technology and Tatung will introduce their products between August and October.

Taiwanese makers began offering DVD recorders in the third quarter of 2003 but OEM quotations for entry-level DVD recorders have dropped to US$250. Quotations for 40GB HDD+DVD recorders begin at US$350, with the HDD costing US$70-80.

Currently Pioneer, Panasonic and JVC dominate the global market for 80-120GB HDD+DVD recorders, with Taiwan retail prices ranging from NT$34,900-44,900. Taiwanese competitors claim that their domestic retail prices will be 30%-40% lower.

HDD Size In DVD Recorders Matter Most

According to the report, “Consumers’ purchase process for digital home appliances: the second survey,” 28.3% of the respondents who “wished to buy a DVD recorder with a HDD within a year” answered that they placed the highest priority on “HDD capacity” in deciding which model to buy.

In the first survey conducted in July-August 2003, the largest percentage of people answered that “price” was the highest priority to be considered. “HDD capacity” earned 0.8 points less than the “price” in that survey. That means the HDD capacity has started to appeal to more consumers in their purchase process.
