Report: Jobs Headed Back to Apple CEO Role

Report: Jobs Headed Back to Apple CEO Role

Back in January, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced a six-month leave of absence to address health concerns he claimed stemmed from a hormonal imbalance. For months, Jobs’ health had been the subject of industry and media speculation, owing in part to the Apple CEO’s visible weight loss between public appearances and Apple’s (and Jobs’) refusal to discuss the issue, citing personal privacy. Apple at one point tried to pass off Jobs’ haggard appearance to a common bug; media speculation immediately focused on a possible recurrence of pancreatic cancer (for which Jobs was treated in 2004) or repercussions from its treatment, and a false report in late 2008 that Jobs had suffered a heart attack had an immediate and sharp impact on Apple’s stock price.

Mayo Clinic Health Manager Takes Medical Records Online...for Free

Although the general public is generally warming up to the idea of conducting financial transactions and banking online—the still-growing popularity of ecommerce and online banking are testament to that fact—the idea of putting medical records online has raised more than a few eyebrows…and turned more than a few stomachs. The possible privacy implications of leaked medical records can be catastrophic: folks might find their private medical conditions and histories exposed to all the world, or find they are denied jobs, insurance, and other benefits due to discrimination. Nonetheless, industry giants like Google and Microsoft have been working on ways for individuals to securely store and control their medical records online, and selectively share information with health care providers.

Steve Jobs Leaves Apple until June

Steve Jobs Leaves Apple until June

Despite an earlier assurance that his long-rumored health problems boiled down to a simple hormonal imbalance, Steve Jobs announced on Wednesday that he would take a leave of absence from Apple until June in order to focus on his health.

In a letter addressed to Apple employees, Jobs explained that the health problems he had made public earlier in January not as cut and dry as he had thought.  “During the past week I have learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought,” Jobs wrote. The letter did not mention to what degree things had taken a degree for the worse, or what treatments might lay ahead.

Apple’s Jobs Admits to Hormone Imbalance

Following Apple’s announcement that this week’s Macworld Expo in San Francisco would be its last —and that this year’s the keynote address would be given by Phil Schiller rather than Steve Jobs—the industry press has been awash in a flurry of rumors and speculation of about the state of Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ health. Investors worry that no clear path of succession to the Apple CEO seat has been articulated, while Job’s very apparent weight loss following surgical treatment for pancreatic cancer has been on display at public events…even prompting Jobs himself to quip that rumors of his death had been greatly exaggerated following the mistaken publication of an obituary. Of course, barely a month later, Apple’s stock price was slammed by fabricated reports Jobs had suffered a heart attack.

Aetna Locks Up with Microsoft’s HealthVault

Aetna Locks Up with Microsoft

Insurance company Aetna has become the first major insurer to sign on to Microsoft’s HealthVault platform, saying it will offer customers the ability to transfer personal information and medical records to a HealthVault account. Once in a HealthVault account, users will be able to dictate who can have access to their medical information, including health care providers, health plans, and even Web-based applications.

Aetna customers will be able to transfer information from Aetna’s Personal Health Record (PHR) system to a HealthVault account in November; beginning at some point in 2009, customers will also be able to transfer information from a HealthVault account to Aetna PHR.

Kaiser Permanente Partners with HealthVault

The United States’ largest not-for-profit health plan Kaiser Permanente has announced it will be participating in a pilot project to enable the transfer of medical records from its own systems to Microsoft’s HealthVault online health site. Initially, the project will be limited to volunteers selected from KP’s 156,000 employees, but if the project works out, the service could be extended to KP’s nearly 9 million members. The announcement could me a major feather in the cap of Microsoft HealthVault, which is competing with Google Health to offer consumers a safe way to tore and selectively enable access to heath care records online—although the entire field is fraught with significant privacy concerns.

Google Health Stores Medical Records

Google Health Stores Medical Records

After announcing the service last year and testing in conjunction with the Cleveland Clinic, Google has finally launched Google Health, a system that enables users to store an online version of their medical records so doctors, healthcare providers, and other authorized parties can access a consistent, centralized set of health data about an individual, and users can control and monitor who has access to their medical information. Google is tagging the service as being in beta form, and plans to both expand and refine its offerings over time.

Google Details Health Records System

At a closing keynote at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMMS) conference in Orlando, Florida, Google CEO Eric Schmidt gave the first public preview of Google Health, and outlined how Google envisions the system making patients’ medical records and health information easily portable between doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, andother health care providers, while at the same time preserving patients’ privacy and enabling them to have complete control over their medical information. He also said Google Health won’t offer up ads; instead, Google wants to make money on the service by using it to drive traffic to its existing search offerings.

Google Testing Health Records System

 Google Testing Health Records System

Internet giant Google has announced it has embarked on a pilot project with the Cleveland Clinic which will involve Google storing the medical records of between 1,500 and 10,000 patients. Participation will be voluntary—patients must consent to having their records handled by Google’s new service. The Cleveland Clinic already operates its own electronic records system called MyChart; however, the Google service will make medical records available to patients using the same passwords they can use to access Google’s other services, like GMail. The records will include details about prescriptions, medical conditions, allergies, and the like, the patients can allow physicians and others to access at their discretion.
