Youth-oriented MVNO Helio has announced a new partnerhip with Buzzd that will enable Helio subscribers to tap into real-time information on local restaurants, bars, clubs, and entertainment venues based on the user’s current location. The option will appear on all Helio devices, and currently offers information for all major cities in the United States.

“Buzzd is the slick new way to find the best local events and venues for the mobile generation,” said Helio’s Senior Manager for Content Services Anna Lee, in a statement.

Sky Dayton Steps Down as Helio CEO

Sky Dayton—who previously founded a little ISP called Earthlink and Wi-Fi hotspot operator Boingo—is stepping down as CEO of the youth-oriented MVNO Helio to become a the non-executive chairman of the company’s board. Helio’s new CEO will be former president and COO Wonhee Sull.

As chair, Dayton will replace Jinwoo So, SK Telecom’s president of global business.

“Helio has reached a point in its development where I feel the timing is right for this change,” said Dayton, in a statement. “I will step into a new role as chairman and Wonhee will become CEO, utilizing his strong operational, product and service experience to manage Helio’s day-to-day operations. As we have for the past three years, the two of us will continue to define Helio’s direction and future.”

Youth-oriented MVNO Helio has quietly stopped offering its Drift phone, but now the company has a new slider handset to capture the hearts and minds of folks who live and die by their phone’s capabilities. The Helio Mysto is another rebranded Samsung handset (this time, the U600) Helio has brought over from South Korea and gussied up with new applications and services. Chief among the new capabilities is an integrated GPS receiver—complementing the GPS-enabled services in other Helio devices—along with a 2 megapixel camera, 100 MB of internal memory, and full HTML browsing capabilities.

Like previous Helio offerings, the Heat supports MP3 audio, MPEG-4 video, and VOD, hooks into Google Maps, and offers a Buddy Beacon for locating your pals. Plus, Helio is adding integration with a wider selection of online sites—including Boing Boing, Wikipedia, Metroblogging, and Digg, all optimzied for Helio members—enabling Helio users to keep up with their online worlds no matter where they are.

The youth-oriented mobile phone operator Helio, run by Earthlink founder Sky Dayton, has launched Helio Music, a new music download service which lets Helio users buy tunes from major labels using their mobile phones for $1.99 each. But that’s not all: Helio promises its catalot and interface will put other over-the-air music download services to shame, and, soon, users will be able to buy tunes via Helio for just $.99 apiece using their PCs.

Helio, a joint venture between Earthlink and South Korea’s SK Telecom, has formally launched its new mobile service aimed at today’s technologically-savvy youth (and young at heart). Headed up by Earthlink founder Sky Dayton, Helio aims to bring advances from the South Korean mobile market to U.S. users who can most appreciate it: kids and 20-somethings who’ve grown up in a world of mobile technology.
