Android Goes To Archos Tablet

Android Goes To Archos Tablet

Google’s Android system has had companies all abuzz for several months, but so far the G1 phone is the only device out there using Android. That will change in the next few months, and Archos is joining the Android supporters, using Android power on a new Internet tablet due in the third quarter of the year.

In a statement, Henri Crohas, CEO of Archos, said:

"Support for an Android-based device represents a historical opportunity for Archos to combine all the best of our Internet media tablets with a phone in a single device delivering high-quality video and a full Web experience in true mobility."

Archos Players Tout Wi-Fi, Flash Support

Archos has introduced its Generation 5 line of personal media players, combining video playback and recording capability with big screens, plenty of storage, the ability to play Flash-powered video, and (for two models) Wi-Fi connectivity, a TV program guide, and the ability to purchase video content from CinemaNow.

“Generation 5 is a breakthrough product line for Archos, with the right combination of content, capabilities, and price to make it easy for technology novices, while still exciting gadget fans,” said Henri Crohas, Archos’s founder and CEO. “Our focus is on the consumer—their interests, their budget, and their time—and the new products represent the first connected PMPs that give consumers exactly the options they’re looking for.”

Archos 604 Wi-Fi Goes to Opera

It was only late last month when Archos rolled out its new wide-screen portable media players, the Archos 404 and 604. Now, Norway’s Opera Software has gotten busy congratulating itself for having been selected as the built-in browser on the Archos 604 Wi-Fi.

Opera and Archos teamed up last year on the Archos Pocket Media Assistant PMA400, and are now extending that relationship into a new generation of devices by embedding Opera 8.5 to enable full Internet browsing on the device. Opera will render pages to the 604’s four-inch LCD display using its Medium Screen Rendering technology, and Archos will develop user interface elements for the device using Web technologies driven by Opera.

Archos Unveils New Pocket Video Recorder

Archos introduced today a new pocket sized Digital Video Recorder and player that makes home entertainment portable. The Archos Pocket Video Recorder AV400 is the industry’s first and only portable digital video recorder with television recording and scheduling capabilities, and audio, photo and data storage in one pocket-sized device.

Geared towards families, TV enthusiasts and gadget lovers, the Pocket Video Recorder AV400 experience starts in the living room where you can record television shows and movies directly from a TV, VCR, or cable/satellite receiver with a convenient one-time set-up TV Cradle. At the same time, the AV400 takes personal entertainment enjoyment far beyond the living room, where consumers can watch videos and view photos on a large color LCD screen, listen to and record music, and transfer photos from a digital camera and data files from a PC or Macintosh.

Device for DVD Movies Raises Legal Issue

Henri Crohas’s company, Archos SA, makes a small hand-held device, like a bulky Palm Pilot, that can record and then play back scores of movies, TV shows and digital photos on its color screen or a TV set. The gadget — which in effect does to movies what Apple Computer Inc.’s iPod does to music — already has sold 100,000 units world-wide during the past six months, beating the big consumer electronics makers to the U.S. market.
