The new version features simplified click-to-call functionality—enabling users to place calls to ordinary phone numbers with just one click while they’re online—as well as multi-person community conversations via public chats and “SkypeCasts.” The program also features a revised interface with a streamlined look and feel.

Skype to Allow Free US, Canada Calls
VoIP provider Skype, in an effort to increase its market penetration, today announced it would be allowing users to make calls to traditional phones in North America. This looks to be a limited time promotion which will last until the end of the year.
As part of this market push, said Skype, users who make SkypeOut calls to traditional landline and mobile phones in the US and Canada will be able to do so for free provided they are making Skype-based calls from either of these countries. Other countries called to or making SkypeOut calls to the US and Canada will continue to incur normal charges.
Polycom, Skype Offer Up USB Speakerphone
Skype and Polycom this week announced a partnership which will deliver as its first product a co-branded USB speakerphone which uses the latter’s audio technology to reportedly offer more natural voice communications without echoes or feedback. The new Polycom Communicator will be available within the next two months for a price of $129.
The Polycom Communicator, said the two companies, comes in a portable, compact design and connects to a computer via an integrated USB cable. Features include full support for hands-free Skype phone capabilities, secondary functions as a high-fidelity speaker for other PC applications, a built-in stereo headset port and an included carrying case.
Skype, Intel Collaboration Bearing Fruit
Collaboration between VOIP leader Skype and chip-maker Intel has yielded its first fruit: a series of calling features specific to Intel’s Centrino Duo or desktop systems with dual-core Pentium D processors, Pentium Extreme Edition CPUs, or Intel’s new Viiv technology.
The first Skype enhancement will be 10-way IP-based conference calling using Skype 2.0, what Intel is calling an “industry first” in peer-to-peer calling, with video calling enhancement planned for later this year, and extending Skype services to Intel-based handheld systems via Wi-Fi and WiMax networks.
