Call Of Duty 4 Big Golden Joystick Winner

Call Of Duty 4 Big Golden Joystick Winner

The people at Activision, the publishers of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, were very happy on Thursday night. At the annual British Golden Joystick Awards, CoD4 scooped the Nuts All-Nighter Award, ESA PC Game of the Year, GamesRadar.com Online Game of the Year and Virgin Media Ultimate Game of the Year.

Unlike the other big British game awards, the Baftas, the Golden Joysticks winners are chosen by the public, not experts, and this year 850,000 people voted, according to the BBC.

David Tyler, marketing director at Activision, said:

Rock Band Coming to Wii June 22

Harmonix has announced that a version of its popular play-along music video game Rock Band will go on sale in the U.S. and Canada on June 22 for a suggested retail price of $169.99. The Wii version of the game will include the Rock Band game, microphone, wireless guitar, and drum kit, and additional standalone instruments will be available for folks who want to build up their band one instrument at a time. The game will include 63 songs, including five bonus songs exclusive to the Wii edition.

January Sales Show Wii Still Winning

New video game sales figures from NPD covering January 2008 show the Nintendo Wii continued to beat out rivals, despite ongoing supply shortages and aggressive marketing by the competition.

During January, NPD says Nintendo managed to sell 274,000 Wii consoles in the United States, with Sony selling 269,000 PlayStation 3 systems and Microsoft moving 230,000 Xbox 360s. Overall sales figures dropped 6 percent compared to January of last year, in part because this year’s period covers four weeks of sales instead of five. On a weekly basis, sales were up 18 percent compared to a year ago.

Guitar Hero Walks Aerosmith’s Way

Guitar Hero Walks Aerosmith

"Not only is songwriting a bitch, but then it goes and has puppies."

So noted Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler as Game publisher Activision announced it will offer Guitar Hero: Aerosmith for sale this June, marking the first time a music video game will focus on a single band. The game will put players in the roles of Aerosmith members Joe Perry, Brad Whitford, and Tom Hamilton as the band progresses from a fledgling act all the way to the top eschelons of rock music royalty.

Guitar Hero Franchise Hits $1 Bln Mark

Guitar Hero Franchise Hits $1 Bln Mark

According to market research firm NPD Group, Activision’s Guitar Hero franchise has set a video game industry sales record, surpassing $1 billion in North American sales in 26 months. What’s more, the latest installment, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, is now that top-selling single-year video game title of all time in terms of units and total dollars earned.

Guitar Hero is one of the biggest brands and one of the most powerful distribution platforms in all of entertainment today,” said Activision CEO Michael Griffith. “Guitar Hero’s popularity with broad audiences is a confirmation that video games have become a true mass medium.”

Rise In Game Accessory Sales

The holidays weren’t just a bonanza for game consoles and, of course, games themselves. They also brought a big boost to game accessories, according to a story in the Financial Times.   The Wii Fit, which focuses on health, was launched in Japan on December 1, since when it’s sold half a million copies. It uses a balance board shaped like bathroom scales.   Accessories are becoming more and more integral to games. In the US the top selling game, Guitar Hero III from Activision, uses a guitar accessory. How popular is it? During November it accounted for 17% of all game sales, a staggering figure given the strong competition. Its rival EA’s Rock Band, includes a microphone, drum kit and guitar in its packaging.   Wireless controllers for the Wii, especially the Zapper, which comes bundled with Link’s Crossbow Training, and PS3 have also been massive sellers, along with buzzer controllers for quiz games.

Guitar Hero III Hits Verizon Phones

Guitar Hero III Hits Verizon Phones

Mullet-wearing—or mullet-aspiring—customers of Verizon Wireless may have received an early holiday present from their mobile phone operator today: a mobile version of Guitar Hero III is now available to Verizon Wireless customers.

The mobile version of the game is priced at $4.49 a month or $11.99 for unlimited use, and features 15 tracks from the Guitar Hero franchise, including “Suck My Kiss” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and “Rock You Like a Hurricane” by The Scorpions, with Verizon Wireless planning to add new songs to the Guitar Hero mobile repertoire every month. The game features four “authentic” guitars—we assume that means pictures of four authentic guitars—and players rock out by pressing phone keypad keys in sync with the colors notes that scroll by on the phone’s “fretboard” display.

Group Warns of Growing Video Game Violence

Group Warns of Growing Video Game Violence

The National Institute on Media and the Family has issued its 2007 report card on the video game industry, and has reached some rather unsurprising conclusions: despite a few retailers’ steps to curtail childrens’ access to violent video games and new software and parental controls, these efforts have not kept pace with game publishers, and violence in video games continues to increase. Furthermore, the group warns the video game industry is becoming complacent about content standards for video games, and finds that children are spending too much time playing inappropriate games. Describing 2007 as an "ominous backslide," the group is calling for significant changes to the video game ratings system and warns parents about video game tournaments being used to recruit youths towards ever more-violent games.

Band Sues Guitar Hero Publisher

Band Sues Guitar Hero Publisher

Guitar Hero III may be the franchise’s latest star as far as fans are concerned, but in headlines, it’s Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s that’s stealing the spotlight – and allegedly a song. The Romantics, an 80s rock band featured in the game, have filed a lawsuit against Guitar Hero publisher Activision, claiming that the game infringes on their image and likeness.
