Hitachi SimpleDrive External Hard Drives Reach 2 TB

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies has just taken the wraps off a resigned SimpleDrive external hard drive, featuring a vertical orientation that takes up less desk space than its predecessors, and an anodized aluminum enclosure that helps cool the drive. What’s more, the new SimpleDrive Rev 3’s are available in capacities up to 2 TB—and Hitachi is extending the top 2 TB capacity as an option across its entire line of 3.5-inch hard drive offerings.

Hitachi is emphasizing the SimpleDrives not only as a way to expand available storage on a system, but as a necessary backup option as users accumulate and pack away more and more digital content like movies, music, photographs, and video.

Hitachi Rolls Out Consumer HDDs and Network Storage Adapter

Some readers may remember when Hitachi bought storage developer Fabrik earlier this year for an undisclosed amount, including Fabriks’s SimpleTech line of external consumer-friendly devices. Now, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies has announced the first products that represent the fruit of that acquisition: two new consumer hard disk drives and a new network storage adapter that lets folks easily pop their USB drives on their network for convenient access.

“Today’s announcement further extends the Hitachi GST brand into the consumer market with the reliability, confidence, and dependability you would expect from one of the world’s leading hard drive suppliers,” said Hitachi GST branded business general manager Mike Williams, in a statement. “Re-branding SimpleTech to the Hitachi brand is an important step in differentiating our solutions in the marketplace.”

Hitachi Buys External Storage Company Fabrik

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies has decided to get into the external storage business by acquiring Fabrik, the privately-held developer of the consumer-oriented SimpleTech and business-centric G-Technology storage brands. Hitachi says it plans to build a new external storage business around Fabrik, with ongoing support for Fabrik’s existing product lines.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"The Fabrik acquisition becomes the cornerstone for the next phase of our business transformation," said Hitachi GST president Steve Milligan, in a statement. "It strategically expands our market presence, strengthens our product portfolio, and increases our customer base."

Hitachi Ultravision UT37V702 Review

Summary

One of the hottest HDTV trends is slimming down already skinny flat-panel televisions. At CES 2009, there were loads of prototypes of ultra-slim plasma and LCD TVs, shrinking overall thickness from around 4 inches to one or less. Hitachi is in the vanguard of this trend with its much-publicized 1.5-inch-thick series of LCD HDTVs, which are available today. Now, is a supermodel-thin set the way to go, or is an “obese” 4-incher the answer? Hitachi sent us a 37-inch UT37V702 to find out…

Hitachi DZ-BD7HA Review

Summary

The flagship DZ-BD7HA camcorder is a Hybrid model. This means it provides the Blu-ray disc recording capability along with a 30 gigabyte (GB) built-in Hard Disk Drive (HDD) which can record approximately four hours of 1920 x 1080 high-definition video (HX mode) or up to eight hours of 1440 x 1080 high definition video (HS mode). Also, with the simple push of a button, it can copy the contents from HDD to BD within the camcorder itself. Easy editing functions such as split, delete and connect can also be made right in the camcorder before using the 1-touch dubbing function to burn Blu-ray disc copies.

Hitachi, Intel Partner on High-End SSDs

Storage giant Hitachi and chipmaker Intel have announced plans to develop enterprise-class solid-state drives for use in servers and workstations, using high-performance Serial-Attached SCSI and Fiber Channel interfaces. The companies expect to ship their first products in early 2010…and, if nothing else, the announcement signals both that SSDs are getting closer to the mainstream in storage technology, and hint at what may be coming down the pike for consumer-oriented systems in a year or two.

"The new solid-state drives for the enterprise include a number of architectural breakthroughs and improve performance and energy usage models that will change enterprise computing," said Intel NAND Solutions Group president and general manager Randy Wilhelm, in a statement.

Hitachi UltraThin Plasmas Reach 50 Inches

Hitachi may have shown off the first of its ultra-thin 1.5-inch thick displays at CES back in January, but in the mean time the concept hasn’t stopped growing – quite literally. The company’s latest release sticks with the slender form factor of its predecessors, but and bumps screen size up to 50 inches, making it the largest of Hitachi’s UltraThin line, and one of the world’s thinnest plasmas as well.

Hitachi CinemaStar Drives Cut Noise, Power

Hitachi CinemaStar Drives Cut Noise, Power

You might think that tossing any old hard drive into a black PC case and hooking it up to a TV makes a perfectly fine home theater PC, but Hitachi wants you to throw away that dorm room mentality and think again. For those demanding a little more refinement for their HTPCs, the company introduced two new CinemaStar drives on Wednesday, tailored specifically to the noise, power and heat limitations of HTPCs.
