The New York Times is reporting (subscription required) that satellite radio operator Sirius XM is preparing for a possible bankruptcy filing. According to the New York Times, Sirius XM owes about $175 million in debt repayments that are due at the end of February that it will not be able to pay. Although a bankruptcy filing is unlikely to disrupt service to the more than 45 million subscribers to satellite radio service, it may signal the departure of some of the broadcaster’s A-list talent…like Martha Stewart or Howard Stern.

IDF: Intel?s View of the Future for Windows, Linux, & Apple Users
The interesting thing about the IDF (Intel’s Developer Forum) is that it exists 2 years in the future.
The reason for this is that it is focused on software and hardware developers who need long lead times to create new hardware and get them to market on top of the new technology that Intel is developing. Virtually all of Intel’s partners are here… but finding the Apple guys is a challenge, because of how secretive they are with regard to what portions of the Intel platform they will use in 2 years.
Digital Radio Set for Growth?
Market research firm In-Stat has been looking at the development of digital radio—and likes what it sees. According to “More Consumers to Tune Into Digital Radio in 2007” the world-wide market for digial radio receivers will grow from just 5 million units in 2005 to over 25 million units in 2010. And digital radio is gainin strong awareness in the consumer marketplace: In-stat claims 73 percent of respondents to a consumer survey had at least heard of HD radio.
Sirius Finally Draws Its Stiletto
If your life feels incomplete unless you can tune into the radiation beaming down from Sirius Satellite Radio, then you might want to check out the Stiletto 100, Sirius’s latest pocket-sized satellite radio designed to compete with recent portable systems from rival XM Satellite Radio.
The Stiletto 100 is a tiny, pocket-sized satellite radio receiver (measuring 4.7 inches by 2 inches by 1 inch) with 2 GB of onboard storage and a 2.2-inch LCD display. The Stiletto enables users to record up to 100 hours of Sirius content, either by automatically recording feeds from user’s favorite Sirius stations (up to 6 hours at a time) and enabling users to save up to 10 hours of individual music tracks from live Sirius broadcasts just by pressing the Stiletto’s "Love" button.
Oprah Comes to XM Radio Today
The new "Oprah & Friends" channel will feature a broad range of talk programming including callers that can phone in to the show. XM Satellite will have exclusivety to the channel for now.
Some of the guest appearances will include: Donald Trump, Julia Louis- Dreyfus, Annette Bening, Jon Bon Jovi, Nora Ephron, Carnie Wilson, Norman Lear, The New York Times’ columnist Thomas Friedman, former presidential candidate Sen. Dennis Kucinich, and others.
Sirius Announces New Satellite Radios
Sirius Satellite Radio has announced four new Universal Plug & Play satellite radio receivers and a new Sirius home stereo receiver with a wireless remote control
The three of the new Plug & Play units—the Starmate3, Starmate4, Sportster3 are extensions of Sirius’ current Plug & Play offerings, while the new Sirius Stratus aims to make it more affordable for people to get hooked on satellite radio. The Starmate4 is designed to be as small as possible—to wedge into tight mounting spots in vehicles, boats, and other locations—while still offering a good-sized display supporting longer track and artist names and five lines of text. The Starmate 44 also replays up to 44 minutes of content and offers pause, rewind, and fast-forward features. The Starmate4 will be available in October at a retail price of $119.99; it ships with a poewr adapter, remote, antenna, vehicle dock, and mounts.
XM Radio Bags Oprah
Itching for more James Frey-esque moments while you drive? You’re in luck, because Oprah and XM Radio have partnered to give Oprah her own talk show. The show called “Oprah and Friends†is part ofthe 3-year, $55 million dollar deal with the queen of daytime talk shows. XM said the Oprah deal will not affect its target to break even on a cash flow basis by the end of this year.
So what can you expect from Oprah and her friends on this new talk show? Expect lots of HARPO-based content. You’ll get clips and segments from “The Oprah Winfrey Showâ€, readings and discussions fromher “O†magazine, and her own weekly realty radio show. Says the Washington Business Journal:
Stern Channels Flipped on Over at Sirius
Radio personality Howard Stern debuted exclusively today on Sirius Satellite Radio in a costly move which the company hopes will bring it lots of new ears. Stern brings his on-air radio show to the satellite radio network as well as being the producer for two channels.
Stern, who was joined by longtime on-air cohorts Robin Quivers, Fred Norris, Artie Lange and producer Gary Dell’Abate, opened his mic for the first time live on Sirius at 6 am ET and PT this morning. Stern’s show will be broadcast Monday through Friday on Sirius channels 100 and 101.
Sirius Grows Subscriber Base
Sirius Satellite Radio today announced they’d closed the subscriber gap with rival XM Satellite Radio. New figures revealed by the company show they’ve recently grown to over 3 million subscribers.
XM Satellite Radio, by contrast, last projected they had over 5 million subscribers. The two services are competing against one another in a still developing technology market and have attempted lately to one up each other with more diverse programming as well as well known celebrities. Sirius has had the most public impact in the latter regard, signing Howard Stern to a five year, multi-million dollar agreement last year. Stern is set to debut on Sirius on Jan. 9.
Sirius Annouces Progamming Additions
There are some major programming line up changes coming to the Sirius Satellite Radio Network September 29, the company said today. Highlights of these changes include the addition of the Howard Stern and Martha Stewart channels.
While Stern will not actually start until January, his new channels will function in a preview mode to keep listeners aware of the build up to their formal launch. The Martha Stewart Living Radio, meanwhile, will focus on advice from Stewart’s team of experts as well as call in advice. The channel will ultimately expand to carry a full roster of shows covering a variety of topics such as cooking, pet keeping and weddings.
