Responding to tough economic conditions and nosediving sales figures, Sony head Howard Stringer has announced (PDF) a shakeup that will see the company reformed around two main groups, and re-align Sony’s top brass so that Stringer will have comprehensive control over the electronics giant. The changes will go into effect April 1 and install Stringer as president of the company in addition to his existing roles and chairman and chief executive. Current Sony president Ryoji Chubachi shift into the role of vice-chairman, assisting Stringer on quality, safety, and environmental concerns.

“”Engineers have always been Sony’s heroes,” Chubachi said, addressing a small group of reporters at the company’s Tokyo headquarters. “A lot of work is going into producing megapixels, ultra-thin super-light gadgets, long-lasting batteries or zooms, and Sony has that kind of power. But we strike out.”
In a major management reshuffle, Chubachi was appointed Sony president, overseeing the electronics business, and Howard Stringer, who has led Sony’s entertainment business, was chosen chairman and chief executive. “

Sony Planning Video Downloads
“Sony Connect, our music download service, has just been launched at beta-testing level and video downloading will follow later this year,” said Howard Stringer, vice chairman and chief operating officer of Sony, at a Tokyo news conference.
A company spokesman later downplayed the remarks and said that while Sony is considering a video download service it has made no decision on timing or the type of video content that may be offered.
