Verizon Hub Re-imagines the Home Phone

Verizon Hub Re-imagines the Home Phone

Verizon Wireless—a company, as the name implies, is mostly concerned with mobile phone services—has introduced the Verizon Hub, a new VoIP-capable tabletop device designed to fit the roll of a home phone and information device. However, instead of relying on landline connectivity, the device latches on to an existing WiFi wireless network and provides VoIP phone service (and access to Verizon Wireless services) via an existing broadband Internet connection—regardless of whether that connection if from Verizon or another provider.

Best Budget Home Audio and Speakers

You’ve purchased a beautiful big-screen HDTV, and now you want a tuneful home theater audio system to go with it. Shopping for a surround-sound system, however, can be mind-boggling. Not only is the difference in quality across the spectrum of available speakers vast, there are several different types of systems that you can purchase – from floor-standing models, to bookshelf speakers, to all-in-one designs. Adding to shopper confusion, speakers are notoriously hard to buy because their sound depends, in large part, on the nature of your room. Finally, there are really inexpensive choices that sound terrible, but there are also some bargain systems from respected manufacturers that sound incredible (the same is true for more expensive models). Here, we’ll focus on budget solutions that offer a high-quality audio experience for a relatively low price. For home theater, you really need surround sound, so for our purposes we have limited our audio selection to systems providing true or virtual surround sound.

Cyber Defense Hub Opens In Estonia

Last year Estonia suffered weeks of debilitating cyber attacks after it took down an old statue of a Russian Red Army soldier in its capital, Tallinn. The denial of service attacks that followed crashed computers in many government departments. Estonia blamed Russia, but Moscow has always denied any involvement.

12 months on from that event, a cyber defense hub has now opened in Estonia. It will be funded and staffed by seven Nato nations – Germany, Slovakia, Latvia, Lithuania, Italy and Spain. By the time it becomes fully operational at the end of August, the hub will have about 30 workers, who will research and train on cyber defense issues. Even the US is sending an observer.

LaCie Takes Award-Winning Hub USB-Only

LaCie Takes Award-Winning Hub USB-Only

Peripheral and accessory maker LaCie raised a few eyebrows a year ago when it introduced its six-port Hub—then called the Huby—featuring an eye-catching, Medusa-like shape from famed designer Ora-Ïto. Now the company has updated the product, either improving or detracting from it (depending on your point of view) by eliminating the two FireWire 400 ports and increasing the number of USB 2.0 ports to eight. The new USB-only Hub also features a new, completely round base that enables the Hub to wobble around…and, again, whether this is an improvement might depend entirely on your point of view.

Belkin to Offer Wireless 4-Port USB Hub

Peripheral and accesories maker Belkin has announced its new Cable-Free USB Hub, which utilizes Ultra-Wideband (UWB) wireless technology to transfer data to and from USB devices to your computer without a connecting cable. That’s right: you can keep your printer, scanner, hard drives, media player dock, and other USB peripherals up to 30 feet away while you lounge on your couch and connect to them all at full speed over the air.
