Honda FCX Clarity Hydrogen Car

With gas prices in most parts of the United States well past $4.00 a gallon, and edging ever upward, interest in finding an alternative fuel source has never been higher. Ethanol, bio-diesel and gasoline-electric hybrids have all already shown up on the market in one form or another, but the auto industry’s darling, hydrogen fuel cells, have for the most part been confined to magazine covers and car expos.

That may change with Honda’s 2008 FCX Clarity, one of the first hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to reach the hands of consumer in the U.S. Beginning in July, the Clarity will move hydrogen technology out of car company labs and onto the streets, when customers begin leasing some of the first publicly available models.

Hydrogen-Powered Generator to Debut at CES

Hydrogen fuel cells may usually come up when discussing next-gen fuel sources for automobiles, but Millenium Cell Inc. and Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies envisioned a different use for the technology: a portable generator. The companies announced on Thursday that they would debut a pre-production version of their HydroPak portable hydrogen-fueled generator at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The HydroPak will use disposable hydrogen fuel cells to provide instant power in the place of a traditional gasoline- or diesel-powered generator. It’s designed to be lighter and quieter than those options, and will also run indoors without problems thanks a to a lack of harmful emissions.

Bush Calls For Ban On Broadband Taxes

Tying high-tech innovation to prosperity, President Bush is using a speech in a swing state to address an election-year vulnerability: a sluggish job market that hasn’t rebounded with the nationaleconomy. In a speech Monday in Minnesota, Bush is urging Congress to slap a permanent ban on taxes consumers pay for high-speed Internet hookups called broadband. He also is touting proposals to makeelectronic medical records the norm and move hydrogen fuel technology from the lab to the showroom.

The White House on Sunday night released a 14-page summary of the remarks Bush is scheduled to make to about 2,000 community college, business and other leaders attending the American Association of Community Colleges annual convention in Minneapolis.
