BT Shedding 10,000 Jobs

BT Shedding 10,000 Jobs

Times are tough, and technology companies aren’t immune from the global downturn. British telecoms giant BT has announced that it will add to the 4,000 layoffs it made earlier this year to bring the total to 10,000 job cuts by March next year.

However, the company insists that this slimming-down isn’t directly related to the economy.

"This is a reflection of the fact we have to become leaner," BT chief executive Ian Livingston told the BBC. "We need to do it in good times and bad."

The cuts will largely hit contract and agency staff, reducing the global workforce of 160,000.

BT to Pump $3 Bln Into UK Broadband

At the moment, British Telecom (BT) has to provide a copper cable connection to homes in the UK, something that’s fine for landlines and current broadband connections. But, in order to have drastically faster speeds, what’s needed are fiber optic cables. And they cost money. A lot of money.

But BT has said it’s willing to invest $3 billion in a fiber optic network that will cover about 40% of the UK by 2012, as well as putting fiber optic into about a million homes – as long as government watchdog Ofcom will allow it to make a fair return on its investment.
