EU says electronic retail sites mislead consumers

The European Union urged consumers on Wednesday to be wary of misleading selling tactics by online electronic goods retailers marketing items like digital cameras, game consoles, laptops and mobile phones.

EU Consumer Affairs Commissioner Meglena Kuneva said an investigation by national and EU experts had found that 55 percent of 369 Web sites checked "are letting consumers down," using dubious selling techniques that had to be changed.

She said they intentionally misled consumers over pricing, buyers’ rights and how to contact the online retailers.

Blog Repression Continues

Reporters Without Frontiers have released their Worldwide Press Freedom Index 2007, and it highlights not only the problems with press freedom for traditional journalists around the globe, but also the threat to bloggers.   A number of countries have seen their rankings fall because of the way they’ve restricted or violated the freedom of bloggers. Several countries, like Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Egypt, have arrested bloggers and closed sites.   Globally, at least 64 people are currently in prison for postings they’ve made online, with 50 of those being in China (the report does not consider recent events in Myanmar). Eight more are being held in jail in Vietman, while an Egyptian man was jailed for criticizing the country’s president and the Islamist control of the country’s universities.   “We are concerned about the increase in cases of online censorship,” Reporters Without Borders said. “More and more governments have realised that the Internet can play a key role in the fight for democracy and they are establishing new methods of censoring it. The governments of repressive countries are now targeting bloggers and online journalists as forcefully as journalists in the traditional media.”   The top-ranked countries for press freedom were Iceland, Norway, Estonia, Slovakia and Belgium. The bottom five were Cuba, Iran, Turkmenistan and North Korea, with Eritrea claiming bottom place. The UK was ranked 24th and the US 48th.

China will Surpass U.S. in Internet Users

With an estimated 1.3 billion people within its borders, it’s just a matter of time before Chinese Internet users become the most populous group on the Web. According to a report issued by the Chinese government on Thursday, the country is well on its way.

China now boasts 162 million Internet users, with 122 million connecting through broadband and another 40 million using dial-up. This places China second only to the United States in the sheer number of Internet users, which has 211 million. Experts predict that China will surpass the U.S. by 2008, or even sooner.

U.S. Reclaims Title as Top IT Country

The United States jumped four places to reclaim the top spot in the latest edition of the Networked Readiness Index from the World Economic Forum. Last year’s winner, Singapore, slipped to number two: the remaining top ten nations are Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Canada, Taiwan, Sweden, Switzerland, and the U.K.

“The Networked Readiness Index (NRI) has become a globally accepted benchmark of an economy’s participation in the networked economy. The NRI provides a useful indicator to decision leaders from the private and public sectors about the role of technology in driving the competitiveness and productivity of nations,” said Soumitra Dutta, Professor of Business and Technology and Dean of Executive Education at INSEAD.

U.K. Broadband Penetration Surpasses U.S.?

New data from broadband research firm Point Topic, as reported by the Times of London, shows that the United Kingdom surpassed the United States in the number of broadband connections per 100 persons. During the second quarter of 2005, the U.S. can claim 13 broadband connections per 100 people, and the U.K. can claim 14.

The Point Topic data isn’t quite borne out by estimates from other sources
