MySpace is Trying to Acquire Imeem

The people spoke on condition of anonymity because talks are confidential.

An acquisition could bolster the unit of News Corp. by adding imeem’s approximately 4.5 million users, its technology and its executives, including founder and CEO Dalton Caldwell.

Universal Music to Stream with Imeem

Universal Music Group has entered a deal with social networking site Imeem to enable free, on-demand streaming of music and videos from Universal Music artists. Although technical details of the streaming technology were not released, one thing was made abundantly clear: the music and video streams will be ad-supported.

The move makes Imeem the first social networking site to offer music streaming from “The Big Four” major music labels (Warner Music Group, EMI, Sony BMG, and now Universal). The service enables users to search for on-demand music and video and create custom playlists for friends and family both on Imeem and on third-party Internet services.

Warner Music Group Drops Imeem Suit

If you can’t beat them, join them. That seems to be Warner Music Group’s most recent strategy in its battle with Imeem, a social networking site based on music. The record label announced on Thursday that it would be dropping its lawsuit against Imeem and instead seek a partnership with the company.

The original lawsuit, which began back in May, alleged that Imeem was allowing users to post copyrighted content, helping grow the community to 16 million users and making Imeem’s founders money off of other people’s property. Warner also claimed that Imeem was intentionally avoiding any effort to remove the offending material.
