Digital Rights Discussed

Powerhouse companies in the entertainment, computer and content industries, as well as government, are gathering together early next week to discuss and debate the hot-topic issue of digital rights.

On April 23 and 24 at the tony Four Seasons Hotel Beverly Hills in Los Angeles representatives from Disney, Time Warner, Microsoft, Google and Fox among others will gather to discuss emerging practices, trends and laws regarding digital rights management, according to a news statement. Debates over digital rights have flared up because of the practice of downloading and trading content that companies deem as protected by intellectual property ownership.

AOL Buying Weblogs, Inc. for $25 Mln

In an effort to further increase its presence in the blogging arena, America Online has agreed to purchase Weblogs, Inc. for a reported $25 million. Weblogs, Inc. is a collection of approximately 80 niche interest sites, ranging from consumer electronics, technology, and video gaming to entertainment and events, including the popular site Engadget. The sites feature approximately 100 regular bloggers.

In an appropriate yet ironic twist to be filed under either the "who watches the watchers?" or "navel-gazing" departments, the agreement was first reported on the media blog PaidContent.org

Dell Remains Open to AMD

“Dell Inc. remains open to using computer chips from AMD as an alternative to those of its current sole supplier, Intel Corp. , but customers would have to demand it, the chief executive of the No. 1 personal computer maker said on Thursday.

In what amounts to one of the PC industry’s longest-running sagas of on-again, off-again courtship, Dell Chief Executive Kevin Rollins once again revived speculation that Dell could end its long-standing refusal to use Advanced Micro Devices Inc. chips. “

Motorola Explains iTunes Phone Delay

“Motorola Inc. did not show upcoming phones designed to work with Apple Computer Inc.’s iTunes digital music service at a recent tech show because of the pair’s differing approach to launching new products, executives from Motorola said on Tuesday.

In response to a question about why Motorola did not show its upcoming iTunes phone at the Cebit technology fair in Germany Motorola said it tends to display its products before they go on the market but Apple’s Chief Executive Steve Jobs does not.”

Motorola Postpones ITunes Phone Debut

“Motorola Inc. postponed plans Thursday to unveil a cell phone that can buy and play songs from Apple Computer Inc.’s iTunes download service, a sudden decision that might reflect tensions with cellular companies who also want to sell music to mobile phone users.

Motorola spokeswoman Monica Rohleder said in Chicago that the company remains in discussions with a number of wireless carriers regarding the first iTunes phone and will announce it “when it’s ready to go,” close to its expected release time this summer. “

TiVo Subscriptions Hit 3 Million Mark

“Digital video recorder maker TiVo Inc.  on Friday said it added 698,000 subscribers in its fiscal fourth quarter, bringing its total to over 3 million.

The Alviso, California-based company said it added 447,000 customers through satellite television provider DirecTV Group Inc. , and 251,000 “TiVo-owned,” or stand-alone, users in the period ended on Jan. 31. ”

We still have not heard whether the Comcast and TiVo deal went south completely or not. Rumors initially predicted the two companies were not getting along, but there could still be hope for TiVo.

Intel Boosts Investment In The Digital Home

The new investments, made from the $200 million Intel Digital Home Fund, include a first-time investment in Gteko Ltd., an ease-of-use networking and support software company, and follow-on financing for Synacor Inc., a provider of portals and technology for delivering bundled online services, and Zinio Systems Inc., a digital magazine distributor.

Financial terms of the new investments were not disclosed.

Honeywell Sues 34 Companies Over LCD Patent

Honeywell has filed a lawsuit against 34 electronics companies claiming infringement of a Honeywell patent for technology that increases the brightness of images and that reduces the appearance of certain interference effects on a liquid crystal display (LCD).

Honeywell’s lawsuit claims the company’s patented technology is being used in a variety of consumer electronics products, including notebook computers, cell phones, personal digital assistants, portable DVD players, portable LCD TVs, video game systems, and digital still cameras.

“Honeywell invests millions of dollars in research and development every year, and we aggressively defend our intellectual property to protect that substantial investment,” said John Donofrio, Vice President of Intellectual Property at Honeywell.

Blu-ray Disc Association Launches

The BDA supports the continued development and promotion of the Blu-ray Disc (BD) format.

Earlier this year, membership was opened to organizations interested in promoting the Blu-ray Disc (BD) format. The growth in membership follows the recent announcement by Sony that PlayStation 3 will support the Blu-ray Disc format and by Twentieth Century Fox that it would join the Association as a member of its Board of Directors.

SOYO Denies Takeover By PC Chips

SOYO Group, Inc., headquartered in Ontario, said the story is erroneous and assures its reseller partners, distributors and customers that the business operations of SOYO Group, Inc. is unchanged.

The quality of SOYO products and services, and the use of “SOYO” brand name now and in the future are not affected, according to SOYO President Ming Chok.

SOYO Group, Inc. became a separate company from SOYO Computer, Inc. in 2002 and is presently traded under the symbol OTCBB:SOYO.

“It is clearly shown in our public announcements that SOYO Group, Inc. is a public company with SOYO Computer, Inc. as a preferred stock shareholder and one of the suppliers,” Chok said.
