Intel, Motherboard Makers License Nvidia SLI

Over the last few years, relations between chipmaker Intel and graphics developer Nvidia have been anything but peachy: the two companies have engaged in fairly public name-calling over Intel’s integrated graphics controllers and product bundling, countersuing each other over chipset licensing, and Nvidia has even been entering the high-performance supercomputer arena, where Intel really doesn’t want a tremendous amount of competition. However, occasionally, the companies can agree on something: Intel has licensed Nvidia’s SLI technology for supporting multiple graphics cards on “Nehalem” P55 chipset-based motherboards built around Intel’s Core i7 and Core i5 processors. Other major motherboard manufacturers Asus, EVGA, Gigabyte, and MSI are also on board. The result is that any consumer with a P55-based motherboard will be able to count on SLI support with any combination of up to three Nvidia GeForce graphics cards.

iTunes and Vista Sing A Sad, Sad Song

One has to wonder what Apple was doing with its time during all the years that Windows Vista was seeded to developers, in developmental beta, in public beta, and available to business and enterprise clients in advance of consumers. Maybe they were too busy making iPods, converting Macs to Intel processors, planning iPhones, and rolling out the Apple TV—who knows? In any case, the maker of one of the most commonly used jukebox applications on the planet—iTunes—seems to have been caught with its pants down now that Vista is available to consumers. It’s best advice to the millions of iTunes users under Windows: hold off on upgrading to Vista until we get the next release of iTunes out the door.

Low-Power Mobile Athlon 64 Planned

AMD’s products currently appeal only to the upper segments, such as the desktop replacement and thin-and-light market. The company has little to offer when it comes to the emerging segment of small notebooks which are dominated by Intel processors.

This scenario could change soon. A PDF document which apparently was accidentally published on AMD’s website reveals plans for a “Mobile Athlon 64 2700+”. Dated “April 2004″, this chip is placed on the lower end of the performance range of the product family. According to the specifications, it nearly cuts the power consumption of other Mobile Athlon 64 chips in half.

AMD AthlonFX-53 CPU Reviews

Quote from the review at Digit-Life:

“It hasn’t been long after AMD announced its first “extreme” processor, Athlon 64 FX-51. And today Athlon 64 FX family was extended with another product, namely Athlon 64 FX-53. Everyone knew in advance what it would be and… turned out to be right: yes, it’s the same K8-based chip operating with DDR400 Registered SDRAM, featuring a dual-channel controller and on-chip 1MB L2 cache. The list of differences from Athlon 64 FX-51 includes the only item: the novelty operates at 2400MHz that is 200MHz faster then the predecessor’s clock rate.”

Thermalright SLK-947U heatsink review

Quote from the review at ipKonfig:

“Thermalright has been in the heatsink business for some time now, and without any doubt has produced some of the best on the planet. While it tends to appeal more to enthusiast users, the heatsinks are not cheap. But with Thermalright heatsinks you always get a product that performs, complete with everything needed for mounting. The SLK 947U comes with a bit more than your typical heatsink and because of this it is able to support both AMD and Intel processors. The good news is that this doesn’t include any additional parts or accompanying extra costs. So you get everything needed in a top quality workmanship heatsink that is designed to perform, and perform it does.”
