Interview: Cash Cab’s Ben Bailey

Ben Bailey may be best known as the Discovery Channel’s trivia-dispensing cabbie in Cash Cab, but most people don’t realize that he’s also a stand-up comedian and gadget hound. Ben told us about the tech behind Cash Cab, his adoration for the iPhone, and why he’s a persistent self Googler.

Digital Trends (DT): How do they fit all of those cameras into the cash cab without anybody noticing before you hit the lights?

They’re all lipstick cameras. They’re mounted in ideal spots, and there’s lights and things that sort of cover them. People do spot them, though. People get in and go “Look, there’s a camera right here!” And stare into it.

Blockbuster Called A Dinosaur By WiFi TV

Wi-Fi TV Inc. chairman Alex Kanakaris in a live interview with Alan Rothman, on the Business of Success talk radio show, created a stir when he called Blockbuster and Hollywood Video dinosaurs on the verge of extinction. In the interview that lasted thirty minutes, Kanakaris expressed his belief that the potential merger of Blockbuster and Hollywood Video will prove meaningless in the big picture of how content delivery is changing. “What’s behind my statement is a list of antiquated thoughts trying to persevere by becoming a bigger and bigger monster, not realizing that no matter how big the dinosaur is, at some point it’s destined to die,” said Kanakaris. Well known for the delivery of the first full-length movie online in 1995, the Wi-Fi TV chairman went on to say, “All the old business models are dead, and the youth of the world have taken charge of a new way of talking, communicating and sharing entertainment.”

Steve Wozniak Shocked Over ThinkSecret Suit

In one part of the interview, Steve voices his opinion on the whole lawsuit:

“I was shocked reading the interview. Everything fits into place that this is an unintentional oversight and the interviewed student appears to be one of the most honest people on this planet. I have to question who is most right in this case.

I wish that Apple could find some way to drop the matter. In my opinion, more than appropriate punishment has already been dealt out. In this age of professional spammers and telemarketers making fortunes, we’re misusing our energies to pursue these types of small time wrongdoers. I will personally donate $1,000 to the Canadian student’s defense.”

World of Warcraft Interview Part 1

“”These kinds of games are monsters – totally unlike anything else we’ve tried to build,” Metzen says in today’s interview about the company’s already hugely successful massively multiplayer title, which is the first part of an exclusive interview with two of the senior figures behind one of the world’s top development studios.

In part one, Metzen and Sams discuss the enormous challenges faced by the company in moving from creating traditional boxed games to building a massively multiplayer title, and talk about how the studio has had to adapt both its business and creative processes to meet those challenges.”

Digit-Life Interviews VIA’s Richard Brown

Quote from the interview:

“As with DDR2, there is no doubt that PCI Express will become the industry standard, because the extra bandwidth and scalable nature of its serial architecture are very beneficial for the industry as a whole. However, it’s hard to say exactly when it will entirely replace the AGP and PCI buses. It seems likely that PCI Express graphics will ramp up relatively quickly to replace the AGP interface by the middle of 2005…”

High Percentage Of WiFi Networks Insecure

Kismet developer Mike Kershaw said in an interview posted at HERT (Hacker Emergency Response Team) that “despite all the press about it, the overall percentage of unencrypted networks is still at about 80%, and companies still make the news for exposing personal data over insecure networks.”

Kershaw goes on to say that he thinks “unfortunately, the same group likely to buy consumer hardware … for a smaller office is the same group least likely to understand the security applications.”

Interview With Epic’s Tim Sweeney

Quote from the interview:

“One of the software highlights of this year’s Game Developers Conference was the first demonstrations of Epic Games’ next generation UnrealEngine3. Even though the engine is several years from completion, let alone titles based on its technologies, the demonstrations left a mark on most that witnessed it. Here we take the opportunity to quiz Epic’s lead programmer, Tim Sweeney, and ask him a little more about UnrealEngine3.

“Q: You have said that UE3 will target DX9-based video cards as the absolute lowest denominator, did you really mean what you said, i.e. nothing but a

Interview With ATI’s CEO Dave Orton

Quote from the interview:

“Prior to the launch of Radeon X800 ATI held an “ATI Technology Days” seminar for press over in Toronto. Whilst there we had the opportunity to talk with the man in charge of steering ATI’s operations at the moment. Tim Stamper: Rare Creative Force

Quote from the interview at Future Looks:

“Making games was simpler back in the early eighties — most of the early arcade classics contained less than 30,000 bytes of information. Compared to today’s biggest titles, some of which come on multiple CDs that can contain as much as 640,000,000 bytes of information, the early games were little more than warm-up exercises. “
