Iogear Media Player Pumps out 720P Video

Iogear Media Player Pumps out 720P Video

What’s in a name? Not much, if you’re talking about Iogear’s new Portable Media Player, which truly has no other designation other than “Portable Media Player,” or GMD2025U120, if you prefer. The company launched the blandly named new 120GB player on Tuesday without much fanfare.

Unlike most devices we’ve come to associate the term Portable Media Player with, the Iogear’s version has no color screen or even external display; it’s strictly for connecting to a television set and playing digital media files. It does, however, have the rather interesting ability to upscale digital video content to 720p resolution, making it handy as a way to shuttle digital video around without burning it to DVD or lugging around a laptop capable of high-def output.

Iogear PCPortal Remote KVM Switch

As most self-acknowledged techies eventually figure out, providing pro bono technical assistance to family and friends comes with the reputation. This doesn’t prove to be much of a problem when they live down the street or around the corner, but when distance comes into play, and you need to walk Uncle Joe through editing his registry over the phone, things get much hairier.

Remote access solutions such as Virtual Network Computing (VNC) meet this need, and allow you to administer PC help from afar when properly configured. But they hit a major snag when dealing with the most seriously dysfunctional computers, since they all require working operating systems to function. That means you’re out of luck when Uncle Joe’s spyware-infested eMachine can’t even load Windows anymore.

IOGEAR Digital Scribe

For all the strides made toward the “paperless office” through e-mail, new types of document files, and even display technologies that make paper look antiquated, the presence of normal writing instruments in everyday life has proved completely unavoidable. It may be more practical to swap e-mails with colleagues than paper messages, but for everyday tasks like writing down an address or taking on-the-spot notes, even the geekiest of us reach for an ordinary pen and paper.

IoGear Offers Up New Mac mini KVM Switch

IoGear, a maker of computer peripherals, today announced a device for Apple’s new Mac minis. The new MiniView USB KVM Switch is priced at $129.95 and should be available now.

The MiniView USB KVM Switch, said IoGear, stacks directly under the Mac mini and sports four USB ports which can be connected to four USB computers for sharing of one set of monitor, keyboard and mouse with speakers. It has two built in cables and two additional detachable cables. Other features include a USB “sniffing” technology which reportedly reduces the delay experienced when switching between computers and assigning of special hot keys when using a PC keyboard to emulate special keys on Macs.
