Spending Time Online Good for Teens?

Spending Time Online Good for Teens?

Forget that image of a mislead teen ditching his friends to play World of Warcraft in his parents’ basement – according  to one new report, spending time online is actually beneficial to teen development. Last week, the MacArthur Foundation released a study indicating that teens use the Web to strengthen social skills and learn more about subjects that their friends might not share an interest in.

“There are myths about kids spending time online – that it is dangerous or making them lazy,” said report author Mizuko Ito, a researcher at the University of California, Irvine. “But we found that spending time online is essential for young people to pick up the social and technical skills they need to be competent citizens in the digital age.”

Qualcomm Patent Decision Stands

Qualcomm Patent Decision StandsQualcomm is going to have to pay a licensing fee to its competitor Broadcom for a patent.   For several weeksQualcomm had been hoping that the Bush administration would come to its rescue and reverse a decision that would mean it had to pay the licensing fee. But the administration has let the decision, made in June by the United States International Trade Commission, stand.   It was felt that the decision could have a major impact on the cell phone industry, since it could lead to a ban on the importation of millions of new phones that use Broadcom’s power management technology. However, two major carriers, including Verizon, have reached deals with Broadcom.   San Diego-based Qualcomm makes chips for phones used by Verizon Wireless, Sprint and AT&T. Its argument is that the $6 a phone licensing fee demanded by Broadcom is excessive. Broadcom, whose home is inIrvine, California, said that Qualcomm was using its power management technology without paying royalties. A pending lawsuit was suspended to await a decision by the U.S. Trade Representative.   But Susan C. Schwab, U.S. Trade Representative, has upheld the ruling in Broadcom’s favour.   Qualcomm plans to appeal for anemergency stay of the ruling to the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.   “We’re obviously disappointed but not terribly surprised,”saidQualcomm’s general counsel Lou Lupin of the decision. Broadcom will seek an immediate enforcement of the ruling, which they claim will only affect 10% of phones, none of which are yet on themarket.

Now, in a move which may have other cell phone makers and mobile operators quaking in their boots, Hop-on has announced maker Motorola has licensed Hop-on’s MP3 phone and flip-phone patents for an undisclosed amount.

Interplay Offices Closed By State

According to a report in Gamespot, less than a day after CEO Herve Caen said Interplay was “still here,” the publisher has apparently been shut down by the State of California. Gamespot quotes an Orange County Register’s  report from Friday that says California’s Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Labor Standards Enforcement forced the Irvine, CA-based developer-publisher of Fallout to suspend operations.

The closure followed a snap inspection of Interplay’s offices by investigators, who found the company was without workers’ compensation insurance and had not paid employees. According to officials, there were 14 staffers on-site Friday during the inspection, and 79 still on Interplay’s payroll–down nearly 40 since their mid-April financial statements.

Senators Ask For e-Vote Decertification

“California has a lemon law which protects consumers if they buy an automobile that doesn’t work. So far, electronic voting in California is a lemon. It needs to be fixed,” said Sen. Ross Johnson, R-Irvine.

Electronic voting machines have been controversial almost since their invention. Some computer scientists say the systems leave elections vulnerable to hackers, while other critics say that because most electronic voting terminals do not produce paper records, there’s no way to ensure accurate recounts.

Ximeta Netdisk Review

Quote from the review at HardExtreme:

” Ximeta Inc. based in Irvine, CA recently unveiled its line of Netdisk external hard drives. The Netdisk is a robust external hard drive solution that takes advantage of Ximeta’s own NDAS technology. Ximeta’s site states, “NDAS is an acronym for Network Direct Attached Storage, XIMETA’s patented disk storage technology which allows direct connection to your network without a server, IP address, or a protocol.” The drive is the first in its class that allows you to connect it to a network via Ethernet without a host. There is no need to purchase expensive server equipment so I find this very cost effective. You can also use it as a regular USB 2.0 drive. In our review we’ll be going over some of the features of the Netdisk as well as let you know about the final verdict and whether we’ll award it the Editors Choice Award for January.”
