Yahoo and MSN Messengers Get Chatty

Online titans Yahoo and Microsoft are (finally) beginning to make good on a promise they made way back in October 2005: as of today, the two companies are conducting a limited public beta test of interoperatbility between users of their instant messaging services. Together, the two services would form the world’s largest instant messaging community, with nearly 350 million user accounts.

The beta test requires users sign up with either Yahoo or Microsoft and run either Windows Live Messenger or Yahoo Messenger with Voice. The beta test is available (with some limitations) to users in a variety of countries, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Hong Kong, Korea, India, Italy, Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Microsoft Acquires File Syncing Company

Microsoft today announced they were acquiring FolderShare, a service which provides remote access and file synchronization to consumers. This acquisition is related to the computer software giant’s build out of their Windows Live Internet based Windows extension.

FolderShare, said Microsoft, allows customers to remotely sync important files and information between two computers without the need for sending large files via e-mail, burning them to CDs or DVDs and mailing them, or uploading them to a Web site. It also enables private, remote access to customers’ own files from any Web browser.

Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Microsoft Debuts Messenger & Blog Services

From the press release:

New breakthroughs in video, voice and personalization features in MSN Messenger transform the service from being a quick way for people to keep in touch to being an essential life-sharing connection between friends and family. Integration between MSN Messenger, MSN Spaces and other MSN network services, including MSN Search, gives people a more flexible way to connect with others through instant messaging, Web logging (”blogging”), and sharing music lists and photos.

Microsoft Launches Instant Messaging Games

From Microsoft’s press release:

Fans of “Wheel of Fortune” are getting ready to spin the wheel and compete against other players — right from MSN Messenger! Microsoft Corp.’s online network today introduced the MSN Instant Games Clubhouse, a subscription, interactive gaming service for MSN Messenger that combines online versions of well-known games with head-to-head competition, advanced features and the convenience of instant messaging (IM).
