iSuppli: HDTV Shipments Pass Standard TVs

Market analysis firm iSuppli has released its forecasts for the growth of the high-definition television market through 2012, and the report contains one interesting tidbit: in 2008, shipments of high-definition televisions have already overtaken shipments of standard-definition televisions.

“The technology is everywhere these days—on broadcast television, on cable, on satellite, and on the Internet,” said iSuppli senior analyst Sheri Greenspan, in a release. “You can’t escape hearing about something being broadcast in HD or getting the most out of your HD receiver or the most HD channels available.”

Few Consumers Recycle Their Old Cell Phones

Few Consumers Recycle Their Old Cell Phones

Green might be the new black, but comparatively few consumers are so environmentally conscious that they’re recycling their unwanted mobile phones. According to market analysis firm iSuppli, fewer than one in ten—9.4 percent—of U.S. consumers who bought new mobile phones during the fourth quarter of 2007 recycled their old cell phones. But, even though the numbers are still small, it still represents some improvement: that rate is almost double the number of new phone buyers who recycled their old phones in the third quarter of 2007.

iPhone Leads U.S. Smartphone Sales

Apple’s iPhone has certainly been a hit with the media…but how has it been faring with consumers? According to new figures from market research firm iSuppli, the iPhone accounted for 1.8 percent of all mobile handsets sold in the United States during July, the iPhone’s first full month of availability. The two-model iPhone line also outsold RIM’s BlackBerry products, Palm’s entire mobile product line, and all individual smartphone models from Samsung, Nokia, and Motorola—and according to iSuppli, iPhone sales were essentially even with sales of the LG Chocolate, the most popular "feature phone" in the U.S. during July.

iSuppli: Dell Barely Edged HP in 2006 Sales

Market research firm iSuppli has weighed in on the battle for the title of number one computer maker, noting that while Dell was the only majo manufacturer to sell fewer computer during the fourth quarter of 2006 compared to the same quarter the previous year, the company had build up enough of a lead to keep rival Hewlett-Packard from claiming the top sales spot. But just barely; for the year, Dell sold 0.3 percent more computers than HP.

Apple iPhone Margin Crawls Toward 50 Pct

Although Cingular is the exclusive service provider for the newly announced Apple iPhone, at least for a several years, Apple doesn’t need to worry about revenue – the iPhone is generating a 50 percent margin for partners Cingular and Apple.

With a selling price of $599 for the 8GB version after a 2 year service agreement, hardware costs for the iPhone fall between $264 and $280 dollars ($264 for the 4GB and $280 for the 8GB version) according to iSuppli Corp. While a 50 percent margin may seem high, Apple is currently receiving similar margins on their iMac and iPod nano according to iSuppli. So why does the iPhone carry such a hefty price tag, especially in a market where phones are typically subsidized through service plan contracts? It gives Apple room to play with should they need to lower the price of the iPhone due to stiff competition in the space.
