¡Bienvenido a México, iTunes!

¡Bienvenido a México, iTunes!

Do good things come to those who wait? More than six years after launching the iTunes Music Store in the United States, Apple has finally launched the iTunes Store in Mexico, offering music from the world’s major labels and hundreds of independent labels and featuring both Mexican and international artists. Most songs are priced at 12 pesos with albums at 120 pesos, and—like other iTunes Stores—the music is available in 256kbps, DRM-free AAC format.

The Mexican version of iTunes also features Apple’s App Store, with more than 65,000 applications available for the iPhone and iPod touch. The store also offers music videos (most of which are priced at 24 pesos) along with a podcast directory.

Forrester reportedly analyzed 2,791 U.S. credit credit card transactions with the iTunes Store over a 27-month period, and while it found transactions for iTunes grew steadily for much of the study period, since January 2006 revenue has reportedly fallen by 65 percent, with the size of the average transaction declining by 17 percent.

iTunes: Get One ‘Conviction’ Free

Gotta admit: even a crufty old franchise like Law & Order can pull a smart marketing move once in a while. From now until its broadcast premiere on NBC March 3, the commercial-free pilot episode for the latest Law & Order spinoff series Conviction is available for free download from Apple’s iTunes Music Store. The episode can be viewed in Apple’s iTunes jukebox application and, of course, is compatible with Apple’s video-capable iPods.

The episode weighs in at just over 200 MB, so, needless to say, the downloadable-TV experience is still safely in the realm of the broadband-enabled. Two other free Conviction downloads are available: a free music video from The Gabe Dixon Bandand a three minute behind-the-scenes segment on the new drama.

New Program Breaks Apple’s DRM

“Most known for his software that breaks the copy protection of DVDs, Johansen with the help of two counterparts has released PyMusique, what they bill as “a fair interface to the iTunes Music Store.”

The software allows for the user to preview songs like the actual iTunes program, however when it downloads the songs, it downloads them without the DRM attached to it — allowing the user once the file is downloaded to convert it freely to any format they wish. Those with songs already downloaded from iTunes will be able to re-download their songs DRM-free as well. ”
