Mobile phone operator Verizon Wireless has flipped the switch on what it surely hopes will be a major new revenue channel as it rolls out high-speed wireless technologies: V Cast Mobile TV, the first commercial mobile television service in the United States. Developed by Qualcom’s MediaFlo gorup, the service is available only in a limited number of markets in 20 states and only works with the $199 Samsung SCH-U620 handset, but it’s a very good bet Verizon will extend availability and add support for additional devices going forward (think LG). In the meantime, V Cast Mobile TV offers access to up to eight channels of television for an additional $15 per month, or $13 per month for reduced services and fewer channels.

RadioShack Tunes Into MovieBeam
RadioShack Corporation announced today that it has begun offering MovieBeam’s set-top boxes at 1,700 retail locations in 331 mjor metropolitan areas where MovieBeam service is available.
At first glance, MovieBeam—backed by Disney, Cisco, Intel, and others—seems like a lot of other set-top box services offering on-demand, rental access to movies. And, indeed, the MovieLink boxes store up to 100 movies, and offer instant on-demand access to a frequently-updated selection of new releases and popular favorites from every major Hollywood studio. But instead of tapping into a user’s satellite, cable, or broadband Internet connection, MovieBeam downloads movies over the air using a special datacasting technology riding on airwaves alongside Public Broadcasting Systems signals. MovieBeam typically offers 100 movies at a time—all downloaded and stored locally on users’ systems for instant access—with 10 new titles delivered every week, including some high-definition selections.
MovieBeam to Offer Online HD Movie Rentals
Last year, the Disney-founded MovieBeam digital movie rental service looked dead before ever having hit the market. Disney took a $24 million write-down on the effort, and rumor was to expect a whole lot of nothing from the effort. But last month, Disney, Intel, Cisco, and VC firms injected over $48 million into the operation, and, suddenly, MovieBeam is ready to go: MovieBeam announced today that it plans to begin offering first-run films from six of the seven major movie studios in standard digital video format
Jacksonville Goes Wireless With Clearwire
From Clearwire’s press release:

Peterson, City Council member Suzanne Jenkins, Cornerstone Chairman John Schmitt and Clearwire Jacksonville General Manager Darren Nichols then cut through the cables with several pair of large wire cutters.
Clearwire Launches Wireless Broadband
From Clearwire’s press release:
“We come into this opportunity with our eyes open to the challenges and difficulties associated with competing against giants in the communications arena,†said Clearwire Chairman and CEO Craig McCaw. “Yet, we have worked diligently to combine a team of people that have a track record for providing exceptional customer experiences in wireless that we believe can make a difference with a unique and powerful technology. Wireless technology can open the gate that has restricted widespread access to broadband services and provide a very simple and satisfying consumer experience.â€

Preface:
First, I would like to say that portions of this article originated from a compilation of findings all over the internet. The mod, bench marking, and pictures were done or performed by the authors. My purpose here was to bring them all together into one definitive article. This article is aimed at those who want to squeeze every ounce of performance out of their components that were purchasedon a budget, and don’t mind taking the risk. Those that love to tinker. Those that want a foot-long sub for the price of a 6". Ok, you get the idea.
