FTC Stops Scareware Scam

Two companies – Innovative Marketing, Inc., which is incorporated in Belize and maintains offices in Kiev, Ukraine, and ByteHosting Internet Services, LLC from Cincinnati, OH – have been named in an FTC complaint relating to a scareware scam, and the body has obtained a temporary restraining order that effectively freezes their activities.

The FTC complaint alleges that the companies, “along with individuals Daniel Sundin, Sam Jain, Marc D’Souza, Kristy Ross, and James Reno, violated the FTC Act by misrepresenting that they conducted scans of consumers’ computers and detected a variety of security or privacy issues, including viruses, spyware, system errors, and pornography. The complaint also names a sixth individual, Maurice D’Souza, as a relief defendant who received proceeds from the scheme.”

Indian Text Service Stopped

The Indian state of Madhya Pradesh has been forced to stop a text messaging service that gave the contact details of vehicle drivers. The reason? People has been using it to discover the identities of women drivers and pester them. According to the BBC, the service had run for a year, and anyone was free to send a text, in return receiving the vehicle owner’s name, address and phone number.   However, young men soon found out they could get the phone numbers of female drivers this way, and after a number of “informal complaints” from the police, the service has been discontinued.   “Now our system does not send back the address and phone number of the owner," deputy state Transport Commissioner Upendra Jain told the BBC.   But the state’s web site still lists addresses for vehicle owners.

Volkswagen, Intel Create Mobile Standards

Be careful, your car may freeze-up; just teasing. Volkswagen’s Electronic Research Laboratory (ERL) will be working closely with Intel to help develop open standards for connecting mobile electronics devices to future vehicles. The first prototype between the two companies features a Mobile PC integration providing the driver access to a variety of media while on the go.

"We’re delighted to be working with Intel, as they share our vision of the potential of open standards," said Parag Jain, Senior Project Engineer at the ERL. "The consumer will benefit when their vehicle allows for mobile connectivity across a variety of media platforms."
