File Sharing Campaign Showing Results

The recording industry today showed the first positive results from its international deterrence campaign against illegal file-sharing and warned that a new wave of litigation will take place in new countries within months.

Today’s results show that legal awareness among the European public has increased and the number of pirate files on the internet has fallen steadily. Meanwhile, the number of legal sites where consumers can buy music has risen to over 100 globally – five times the number of one year ago.

The music industry’s campaign to promote legitimate online music services has stepped up a gear with the publication of a new directory of digital music services on the one-year old http://www.pro-music.org/ website.

The directory offers a comprehensive selection of legitimate online services across the world where consumers can access and download music. It lists over 100 sites covering virtually every region of the world, the numbers of available tracks, type of repertoire and links to the services. File-sharing Suits Go International

From the IFPI press release:

IFPI and the recording industry associations in Denmark, Germany, Italy and Canada today announced the first wave of international lawsuits charging individuals with illegally file-sharing copyrighted music.

A total of 247 alleged illegal file-sharers face legal action in a move that steps up the industry’s international campaign against online copyright theft. Further waves of lawsuits against major offenders will be launched in different countries in the coming months.

The legal actions, following similar successful actions in United States, charge the individuals with illegally making available hundreds of music tracks for copying, transmission and distribution via file-sharing services.  Read more...
